closing tin cans, which, ho states, com?
pletely obviates the usual difliculties of
unsealing. . .Take one, pound of rosin
and a .table spoon-ful of lard and melt
them together, the lard rendering tbe
rosin less brittle,when cold. After fill?
ing the eau with fruit, place the tin cap
in position, then take a piece of strong
muslin* larger than the opening in the
can, smear ouo surface with the melted
rosin, and fit smoothly and accurately
over the tin cap; when cool, smear tho
upper surface of tho muslin with the
rosin. The can is readily opened with
tho applicaUpn of hot water. Glass jars,
it is stated, may be scaled in tho same
way. The abc vc method has boon tried
for several years, and, it is asserted, has
effectually preserved the canned fruit
from the air, while allowing ready access
to the contents of tho vessels.
Now that our Atlantic cables have be?
come undoubted (and m cst advantageous)
successes, the papers of California arc
beginning to agitate for a cabio between
the West coast of America and the
Asiatic continent. They say that the
requirements. \of their increasing trade
with Chino? Japan, aud, to a certain ex?
tent, with Australia, etc., would moko it
a sure success pecuniarily; and, although
it wovdd.be a much longer one than that
'spanning the Atlantic, tho Pacifio Ocean
is usually so much moro tranquil that it
would present fewer obstacles to tito
work of laying it.
Experiments in France and Holland I
have shown that sun-flowers, when plant- j
od on an extensive scale, will neutralize!
the deleterious effects of exhalations j
from marshes. This plan has been tried j
with great success in the fenny districts I
near Roehefort, France, and the authori- ]
ties of Holland assert that intermittent
fever has entirely disappeared from dis
triers where the sun-flowers have been '
planted. They are also said to be efiica- j
cious id*chills and fever.
TUNNEL THROUGH THE ALPS.-The!
Mont Ceuis tunnel, when finished, will
connect France by railroad with Italy, j
through the Alps. This great work was
begun in 1857, and was at first carried |
on by manual labor. It is now carried
on by machinery driven by compressed !
air. The present rate is about one yard I
' a day on the French side. The excava- j
tions proceed from both ends, aud it is j
intended that the workmen shall meet :
and shako hands in the middle of the |
Alps some time in 1873.
Figaro says, "while London raised a I

Isaac Switcher, now in the Maryland
Penitentiary for cow stealing, has been
left $80,000 by an aunt. Ho has three
years to serve yet.

St. Petar, Miuuesota, was lately visit?
ed by so copious a shower that in a very
few hours the streets became navigable

to die of starvation.
