Wo think the proposition correct. We do not speak ot* the rate of wages alone, but propose to include all tho advantages that the laborer here enjoys. Of course, we mean labor that is labor. Tho saun? terer and the shirk does poor work, and get? poor reward, here as well as every? where else. But the energetic and faith? ful laborer has a rare chance. We know a colored man, with a wife and three children, who last year supported his family, and laid by 61,000, by farm la? bor. We know another, with live chil? dren, none of them large enough to ren? der much of any valuable assistance, who lived well and saved $300, nud his chance was not a very favorable oue, as the land which he worked did not yield more than a quarter of a bale to tho acre. This year he will do better, aud will probably clear S500, besides having corn and pork enough to curry him through tho nest year. Let us see how this is done. Any good, reliable man can get all thc land ho can work upon shares-that is, mules, farming implements and lands will be furnished him, and he will get half of the crop. He eau tend twenty or twenty five acres, and have his gardon and sweet potato patch besides. Suppose he works Arkansas land or somo of the best Mississippi. He ought to make ten bales of co;'on. half of which is his, and all the corn he needs. If he has a family to assist him, he can do projiortionatoly more. He has his rent and fuel free. By ordinary management and economy, he can live comfortably and save from $200 to 8500 a year easily. The whole cotton crop is estimated this year at 2,000,000 bales. The price promises tc be high, so that we may calculate that the crop will be worth 8200,000,000. Suppose that this crop was nil raised OD shares-and tho demand for labor ii such that the most of planters are glad to make sock arrangements-there would be SIOO.000,000 to divide among the la? borers. But this is only about one-hall of what they would earn if they were in dustrious, because the corn and otbei crops, as well as their vegetables ant" fruit, would be worth almost as niucl more to them. The climnte is such thal they can easily make themselves com fortable all the year rouud. Industry, intelligence and economy would sooi make the laboring population here th? most comfortable and independent oi the face of the earth. The savings of ? few years, rightly managed, would KOOI enable each laborer to become his owi employer, for laud is abundant an; cheap. Soon the mau eau get n littl tract, and have n permanent home fo bis family, where comfort would alway be present, and where luxury nvd eic gance would add to their enjoyment sooner or later, in sufficient degree. The laborer does not know what capital he possesses. Ho can soon at quire at least 100 acres of laud, and the his possessions steadily increase b accretion. He will have cows and oxen horses and mules, sheep and swiue an poultry, and they will increase so as t add to his wealth moro rapidly than tb highest rate of iuterest would yield. There is so niue excellent land yet unopened; it is t cheap and the staples produced so valui ble and in such demnud, that tho abilit to labor well must, for a long time, be valuable possession to any man. Indu try is the best aid of virtuo and intel) gence. The industrious man is soldo a vicious man, and he need not be s ignorant mau. Labor is the chief ham maid of knowledge, for the mind healthy and vigorous in a sound ai vigorous body.
