RAILBOATJ MEKTJNU.-A meo ting of the citizens of this place was called at the Court House, on Saturday evening last, for the purpose of considering a propo? sition from th? corporators of the South Carolina Central Railroad, which de? manded immediate action. The Central Railroad went into legal existence on the 18th instant. The .fol? lowing is the proposition made to tho people of Lancaster hythe corporators: 1. If tho owners of the Camden Branoh will, by vote, agree to unito with us, and take stock in our company in ex? change for their stock, on equal terms, then we will lift their road for thirteen miles and turn it round to Sumter. 2. We will run from Camdon to Lan? caster if the people of Lancaster will give tho right of way free, and subscribe $100,000 to the sto"k of the company, to be paid in land along the route of the line at its assessed value or in cash. The following resolution, submitted by Wm. A. Moore, Esq., was unanimously adopted: Resolved, That this meeting unani? mously accepts and express unhesitating? ly the opinion that the people of Lan? caster will unreservedly accept ?be pro? positions submitted by the corporators of the Central Railroad, communicated in the letter addressed by the Hon. R. J. Donaldson, Senator from Chesterfield, to our own Senator, Hon. R. M. Sims. A committee was appointed to nomi? nate delegates to attend the meeting of the corporators in Sumter, on the 18th instant. The eommittee named tho fol? lowing gentlemen: Wm. A. Moore, N. G. B. Ghafee; alternates-J. B. Erwin and D. J. Carter.-Lancaster Ledger. THE LAW OP DIVORCE.-The Greenville Enterprise says: Judge Orr has rendered an adverse de? cision in the oase of John H. Walker vs. Mary J. Walker, petition for divorce. The case has been held under considera? tion since last court, and tho legal pro? fession will be indebted to the Judge for the very learned and able opinion in the case. We have examined this opinion; it will form a land-mark in future cases. The Judge distinctly indicates that the Court of Equity of this State always had the power to exeroise jurisdiction in di? vorce cases. We have long been of the opinion, notwithstanding the uniform disclaimers of the Judges, and have al? ways believed that a Court of Equity could and ought to have granted di? vorces where there existed the scriptnral justification. It is manifest that Judge Orr would restrict the granting of di? vorces to cases of the most aggravated character, and he would not suit Chicago or the State of Connecticut. WHAT OHIO THINKS OF THE FIFTEENTH AMENDMENT.-The defeat of the pending fifteenth amendment will leave tho ques? tion of negro and Chinese suffrage to be dealt with by the States. Will it be de? feated? Upon this subject tho Cincin? nati Enquirer says: "We shall be told that it will make no kind of difference whether Ohio ratifie i the amendment or not, it will be a fixed fact, and Ohio must have negro suffrage whether she wishes it or not. That kind of an argu? ment is an insult to tho independent voters of Ohio. States may ratify it in any manner and form as Indiana has done, or as Virginia, Mississippi and Texas are forced to do. In the event of it j not being ratified by three-fourths of the States in a constitutional manner, the whole sehemo will fail. The people of Ohio should, therefore, vote as if the whole question depended upon the deci? sion in this State. In every view of the case it is an important issue in this oan yass. PEACH ORCHARD FORTY-FIVE MIT.ES Lona.-George F. Akers, of Nashville, who is at present on a visit to Virginia, writes to a friend in Nashville from Pe? tersburg that "the breast-works in front of Petersburg, thrown up by the Con? federates during the late war, extending to the left towards Richmond about twenty miles, and to the right about twenty-five miles, for the defence of the city, nave grown up in a continuous line of peach trees of every variety, yielding an abundant erop the present year. This is the only legacy left by our poor fellows who were on the advance line within 100 yards of the enemy. Having eaten the fruit while on picket duty, they cast the seed aside and now they appear in one continuous line of forty-five miles in beautiful trees, yielding the greatest variety of the finest fruit. On Saturday last, two n e men were killed by a negro, in Lauderdale County. Tho white men wero in tho woods hew ing logs for a building, nnd had felled n tree across a neighborhood road, and until cut away, it was necessary for per? sons passing to ride around it, and seve? ral had dono so. When tho negro in question came along, being drunk, in? stead of going round, ho rode over the log on which tho white men wero at work. Upon this a quarrel arose, and in the midst of it, tho negro drew a pistol, and shot them, striking one in tho bend, kill? ing him instantly, and wounding tho other fatally. Our informant says tho negro had not boen caught, but that hundreds wore in pursuit of him. [Huntsville Independent, At Frcderisk8burg, Va., they call lights between loyal blacks "wool gather? ing?." A natural curiosity was exhibited in Tuscumbin, Ala., last week, in the shape of a young pup with a flat face and ears like a human. It had one eye, which was placed where the mouth ought to have been, and a short snout for a nose. It lived but a short time. Francis B. Blanc], one of the parties j implicated in the robbery of the safo of | the Southern Express Company, on the road between Savannah and Augusta, has turned State's evidence, and charges j the theft upon W. C. Hargrove. HEALTH OF CnARLESTOX.-During the week ending ou Saturday last thoro were twenty-nine deaths in Charleston, six white and tweuty-three blacks. Of tho blacks sixteen were children. Three oolorcd adults died of consumption. Tho Etowah Iron Works, bettor known as Cooper's Iron Works, havo recently been seized by tho United States Govern? ment as tho property of the Coufederato | States. A Western editor speaks of Anna I Dickinson as not stylish, but refined. It may at least be considered questionable whether a woman who prefers a negro husband to a white one, can properly be called refined. A malicious cotemporary says: "Pretty girl, Amanda, is!"
