A WOMAN ruc A CUING IN A TRANCE. Mrs. Nancy Birney was boru March 20, 1807, near Cadiz, Ohio. Her father reared thirteen children, of whom ATO '/O.^B and four girls are still living. At LU'' age of eighteen, while pitching a 1 .cd of hay from a wagon into a mow, abe *was struck by lightning, which para? lyzed the right half of her body from the crown of her head down. She was en? tirely insensible two hours. She reco? vered, and at the age of twenty-three years married Mr. Birnoy. They aro considered wealthy, having a fine farm and a good brick residence about one mile East of Tippecanoe. They bave reared three children-two sons ng?d re? spectively thirty-nine and twenty-oigkt years, and one daughter aged twenty-six -all married and in good oironmstances. Mr. Birney is an exemplary member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, but his wife belongs to the Presbyterian Church, bnt she says she is not a .sectarian in any sense whatever. .About twenty-three years ago she was suddenly taken ill, ns was supposed, and while in an unconscious state delivered a religious discourse. From that time until the present, these spells have come upon her regularly every two weeks. At first they occurred on week days, but for the past twenty years they have in? variably happened on Sunday, at about 10 o'clock A. M. For a long time the bouse was crowded on her preaching days, bnt latterly tho novelty of the case has oeased to excite tho wonder of tho neighborhood, and those who now at? tend her preaching are mostly persons from a distance. But rain or shine, Bummer or winter, whether there be a crowd or only her own family present, she regularly passes into an unconscious state, and delivers a religious discourse always one hour to an hour and thirty minutes in duration. She affirms most solemnly that she is not conscious before nor after her dis? courses of a Bingle word that she utters. Indeed, it was a long time before her family and friends could convince her that she spoke at all while in this strange state of obliviousness ae to what is poss ing'in the outer world around her. j Cleveland Herald. A NEW WONDER-A REVOLUTION IN STEAM ENGINES.-The Jersey City Tijnes has, a description of a machine, now in operation in that city, which, it is claimed, is destined to work a revolution in one department of mechanical indus? try, namely, a steam engine, which, with one-quarter of tho weight, and occupy? ing one-quarter the space required for an ordinary ten-horse engine, will give the same power with twenty-five per cent, less fuel. This little machine sets at defiance all preconceived notions on the subject. Its motive power is all con? tained within the circumference of a broad, stout wheel, about three feet in diameter, revolving npon a hollow shaft, whioh receives the steam and delivers it alternately into two opposite reciprocal cylinders, and fixed between the centre and periphery. The power, therefore, instead of being at the centre, presents the singular anomaly of being at the cir? cumference. Or, in other words, the true centre of power is at the periphery of the wheel. To use a familiar simile, the wheel is like the band or drum of a squirrel cage, in whioh two squirrels were consentaneously, one in the usual position, the other in the opposite, but with head down, and with a motion simi? lar to that of a fly walking on the ceil? ing-both, of course, in continually re? versing positions as the wheel turns. It ia an application of the simple princi? ple by which, as any one can see, a grind-stone may easily be turned by placing the hand upon its surface, while only with considerable musoular exertion a man's hand grasping the shaft can produce the same motion. The great ship canal, which is to con? nect Amsterdam with the North Sea, at a cost of 27,000,000 guilders, is nowonco more in progress, the Government of the Netherlands having relieved the con? tractors of certain difficulties which for a time hindered the work. The canal will be about fifteen miles in length. The Zuyder Zee is to be shut out from Amsterdam, and the Pampus dam by whioh this is to be effected is already half finished, and the locks and sluices connected with it are in progress. A Western paper announces the illness of its editor, piously adding: "All good paying subscribers are requested to men? tion him in their prayers. The others need not, as the prayers of the wicked avail nothing, according to good authori? ty." At Wheeling, Va., last Saturday, as workmen were hoisting the pinnaclo of the steeple of St. Alphonso Church, weighing about a ton, to its place, the derrick gave way and it went crashing through the roof into the church below. Nobody was hurt. An Irishman being about to join a company, forming during our lute war, waa questioned by ono of the officers: "Well, sir, when you get into battle, will yon fight or run?" "An' faith," replied the Hibernian, "I'll be after doin' as a majority av yoes does." At Lydon, Ct., a dove flow into the Congregational Church and lit on tho minister's head. Ho was bald, and the poor dove thought it was a skating park. ric-nics in Pennsylvania are wound up by the girls standing in a long row, -while the young men go along the line and kiss them all "good night." The winding np business is always anxiously looked for by the girls. The street boys in Chicago hare jolly times. The men never interfere with them, for fear of injuring their own chil? dren.
