GET TIGHT ON.-The extent to which
tho habit of the secret use of chloroform
prevails to-day among all. classes of
women, from the inmates of the shanio
f ni haunts of Greene etreePto the. holies
of the Fifth Avenue, and ! tho pupils of
fashionable boarding schools, is known
to few except the apothecaries who sup?
ply the deadly drug. For deadly^it is;
and though its poison is sometimes as
swift as the cobra's, it is-ut others sloy
in its vengeance, reaching through years
of misery, but always sure and inevita?
ble. .We hear wit? terrible frequency of
sndden deaths frpfe chloroform, "taken
only to allay a headache;" bot we do not
hean, pf tho -wreck of the brain and the
ruin ol the nervous system, which its
habitual use surely brings about. . The
swiftpoas with which .it produces .its
dreamy intoxication, and the few. 'appa?
rent trices which it leaves behind, make
it a favorito with women who know noth?
ing of its ungovernable force, of its cu?
mulative effects, and of its terribly dan?
gerous nature. Its use is far more de?
precated than that of alcohol or opium,
the effects of whioh can easily be fore?
told. Chloroform, on the contrary, is
as subtle and sudden in its wayward ven?
geance as the most treacherous and dan
Serous of the women who uso it. The
ono that was seemingly innocuous yes?
terday, may, if repeated, bring swift and
resistless death to-day, and though tho
penalty should be delayed, it is certain
to be inflicted sooner or later. When, a
year or two ago, a writer charged Ameri?
can women with drunkenness, the charge
was easily repelled, for tho delicate or?
ganization of the: ?fined lady instinctive?
ly and notoriously ohuns the rude grasp
of alcohol. The charge that chloroform
is largely used by women is, however,
lamentably true. It is generally used in
ignorance of its nature and ultimate
effects, but the sad and disgraceful fact
that it is habitually employed to an
alarming extent, as an aid to female
drnnkenness, cannot be gainsaid.

"A Pota. HAND'S GOOD."-The good
old times are not gone forever. Here is
an inoident: On the recent trip of a
Mississippi steamboat, the olerk had
allotted the last state-room, and was
about to close his office, when he was as?
tounded by the apparition of a tall Mis?
sourian, who exclaimed: "I say, stranger,
I want one of them ob ambers." "Sorry,
sir," said the official, blandly, "but our
state-rooms are all taken." "The d-1
they are," responded Missouri; "I've
paid my fare'n I want one of them cham?
bers." "Allow me to see your ticket,"
said the still polite clerk. Putting his
hand to the back of his neck, the pas?
senger pulled out a ten-inch Bowie
knife, and driving it quivering into the
counter, said: "I'm from Pike County,
young feller, and thar's my ticket. I
want one of them chambers'." Before
the steel had ceased to vibrate, the
prompt clerk quietly thrust a loaded and
capped six-shooter under Pike's nose,
and coolly answered: "I've only six
'chambers,' and yon see th ev are all full."

and putting up his "tooth-pick," ejacu?
lated: "A full hand's good, by G-I"
