BEHIND THE SCENES !
"I will tell you,** said'Mr. F-, ??af 1
an inoident that ocourred h?re many
years ago. It possesses to mo now, as I
think of it, oil"tho vivid interest it had
then? It was amoag the first class cases
entrusted to' ISx: I and myself, and
we devoted to it an nu weary patience
and assiduity that fitted us.for their ex?
ercise manya- time afterwards. It was
in mid-win ter that the circumstance I
allude to occurred. The theatrical sea?
son was at its height. The St. Charles
was nightly thronged with the beauty
and fashion of the oity. A new star had
appeared on its boards, exciting nu inte?
rest prevalent and absorbing. Her
beauty, grace and accomplishments were
the topic -of every olub-roc m-tho one
subject that engaged the attention of all
the youth in tho city. Her name was
Adele jjaronclu. Very young-scarcely
twenty-and very beautiful was this
young girl, around whom a web of mys?
tery was woven that seemed to defy hu?
man ingenuity to unravel. .
I say she was beautiful, but that word
does not convey an ad?quate idea of her
exceeding grace of blind and person.
Petite in form, the slender figure was ex?
quisito in symmetry. A wealth of bright
tilden haft1 shaded a face rosy with
health and brilliant with genius. The
clear, hazel eyes flashed with intelligence,
and tho delicate curve of the exquisitely
chiseled lips expressed hatred or scorn,
or intensified emotion.
Night af te i- nigh t the theatre was filled
with her admirers. Passion in every
phase-tho very well-springs and im
Eulsea of our nature-seemed to find in
er an inter pr o tor that never erred. Her
analysis of ohoraoter was perfect; it was
true to nature; and therefore p?rfect.
Tho night of which I speak had wit?
nessed her greatest triumph. She seemed
inspired, and the feelings and emotions
of her audience appeared as i absolutely
under her control as if she wielded the
wand of an enchantress. The curtain
fell on the last act of the tragedy, and
the audience dispersed. Some mesme?
ric power held hie to the spot, and I
lingered around the entrance of the
theatre.
An hour must have passed by, and the
last of the company crept out of the nar?
row aisle leading to the stage, and sought
their hornes. Still the actress lingered;
ber carriage at the door-the driver im?
patient. Suddenly from behind the
scenes-echoing along that narrow aisle
-came FL scream so piercing that it cut
bo the heart like a dagger. It chilled
my blood. I stood rooted to tho spot;
roguish, horror, grief, were in its tones.
In a moment more, I dashed open the
door and rushed into -tho theatre. Close
at my back came -Mr. I-, the driver
and the porter of the establishment.
The light in the green room was still
burning. Tho larg? mirror that hung
from the wall reflected from the oppo?
site sofa the tinsel and mock jewelry of
Et queen. I noticed this ns I dashed open
tho narrow door that led to the dressing
room assigned the actress. It was empty.
E called her by name. I shouted until
the walls of the vast building echoed
back my voice. We searched every?
where, underneath and above the stage,
even among the rolled curtains in tho
loft, and the narrow apertures between
the soenes-in vain. The actress had
disappeared. The screams that had so
startled ns wore not repeated. Thoro
was no avenue of escape, still she was
gone. Mr. I-visited her apartments at
the hotel. She was nat there. The gas
was relit in the theatre and our search
resumed. She was hot to bo found.
Ser friends were visited; the most tran?
sient acquaintance called o?, with a like
reBult.
Bach hour, instead of revealing the
mystery, only deepened it. In the light
sf the morning we continued the search.
A single Objeot Was discovered, which
sould possibly afford a due to the miss?
ing girl. On the floor of tho dressing
room was a diamond ear-ring. It looked
as if it had been torn from its place. It
was not such a ono os was worn by the
actress. It established beyond question
the presence of another person in her
room, and that person a female. This
was all. The mysterious interview and
its termination wero shrouded in a veil
of darkness our ingenuity could not
penetrate. If Hie earth had opened and

One day I Stood leaning negligently
on the counter of a fashionable jeweler.
I love?\;tp gaze upon tho brilliant gems
that strewed the case and filled it with a
weird, flashing light. My attention ab

the entrance of a lady-her foreign ac?
cent in addressing the jeweler caused
me to turn around. Sbo hold an ear?
ring in her hand, and was inquiring the
cost of one if made to match it. Tho
first glance I .had of it mado the blood
leap like fire in my veins. It was the
counterpart of tho one found in thc
theatre.
You niay imagine I did not loso sight
of that woman. I knew I had struck on
the right clue.
I' traced ber home. The panther
nover stole on his victim more silently
than I in the footsteps of tho dark
browed Btra Jiger.
BI scarcely knew how I got back to thc
office. I seemed to have triumphed over
space and time. More like a maniac
than a deteotivo, I rushed up to Mr.
I-- and imparted my intelligence. He
was not less excited than I. We both
felt nu interest in the beautiful girl as
strong as if she had been a sister. But
we knew that our steps must bo wary
and our movements secret as the grave.
We had no common criminal to deal
with. If not the orob fiend himself, we
knew sho was almost as cunning. The
mystorio.is abduction of tho actress dis?
closed a quickness and sagacity at once
ingenious and profound. The same
subtle spirit we did not doubt wo should
have to encounter again. It was not,
therefore, with a feeling of assured suc?
cess that we prepared to enter the resi
i dence to which I hod traced tho foreign
I lady.
It was not as officers of the law usually
go, that we went on that occasion. We
i employed rather the subtle cunning and
perfect skill of a man brougbt up to the
I business. For once bis nefarious art
I helped bim to a noble deed. A lifo of
crime was whitened by a single virtue.
Before the skill of this man the door
sprung back upon its binges, and we
stood within the portals where the issues
of tbis strange mystery were to be de?
cided. Silently we ascended the stairs.
A gas flame, burning from a globe, sus?
pended f rora the ceiling, flung a mellow
figbt along the stately corridor. At the
further end of the ball a door opened
into a large apartment. We moved to?
ward tbis, and as we approached it
sounds of weeping struck on our ears,
and then we heard a voice of supplica?
tion. Sorrowful and sad tho strange,
sweet voice floated out on the air. It was
like tbe wail of a broken heart, that cry
of one in distress.

It thrilled, to my beart. Even in that
pitiful cadence I knew those well-remem
