It attri? butes the success of the conservative Republicans to the faot that the Demo? crats, have ftt length awakened to the ne? cessity pf abating their ancient extremity and recognizing all the results of tho late war, so far as it should be necessary to the end of including Republicans of a moderate type to act with them, that they might not be forever shut out in the cold. It asks what will be the effect of these Southern events on parties in the North, and says: "It seemed at one moment as if they were to be tremendously disastrous to the Republicans by leading Northern Democrats to act on the shrewd example of their Southern fellows. Witness the nomination of Rosoncrana by the Demo? crats in Ohio. Fancy the copperheads seeing some good in the hero of Stono River. There was a similar tendency in Pennsylvania, but the good impulso to nominate Hanoock failed of its point; for Mr. Picker is very rich, and a rich man is a wonderful thing in Pennsylvania. Even despite the snspicion with which the country very jastly regards every? thing that now comes before it in thc name of Democracy, it ia impossible not to see that if the Democrats should make their appeal on suoh names as Hancock and Rosenoranz-names that guarantee the grand points of patriotism and un? swerving fidelity to the national unity they would seriously trouble the Repub? licans in all the great States. Indeed, this possibility, in view of what hos just tak?n place in the South, has thrown tho Republican leaders into no little alarm. They are in a eemi-demoralized state, with the consciousness that their party bas, in a great degree, lost its affinity with the popular will, and the fall elec? tions in the great States must be over before any man can be certain that they have not abundant cause for their unea? siness." Tho Avitor, as the new inven? tion is named, is to be propelled by steam, carrying for this purpose a five hoTse power steam engine, and is to bo elevated and supported in the air partly by gas and partly by planes extending on- each side to the distance of about twenty feet at the centre. These planes will be so constructed in sections that they may be depressed or elevated by tho rudder at pleasure. TRIPLETS TO A YOUTHFUL MOTHER. A correspondent of the Savannah Re publican, writing from Scriveu County, gives tho following: A good lady acquaintance of mino, Mrs. B., of this county, gavo birth a few days ago to three fino, healthy boys, which up to this time aro doing finely, and give every promise of being raised, and possibly growing into great men. The fact that the good lady is only some fifteen summers old, and being tho first time she has given birth, and that her mother gave birth at a like tender age, may be considered remarkable, and to the scientific men interesting. As a large excursion train on the Atlantic road, neared the crossing the flagman signalled that all was right, and the heavily-loaded train kept on. When it was near the crossing a special train on the Amboy road came in sight around tho curve, approaching at high speed. The flagman instantly displayed tho red j, but neither train could atop. Most fortunately one of the brakemen on tho excursi?n train had the remarkable pre? sence of mind to cut the train and put the brakes down on the cars cut off, whioh so slowed them that a gap in tho train was formed just at tho crossing, and tho Amboy train dashed through ! and no injury was done. But for this the loss of life and mangling of bodies that must havo occurred would have been fearful beyond description. There were 2,000 persons on tho exoursion train. On Friday, ns the noon oxpress train on the New Huven road, bound East, was nearing Westbrook, tho engineer discovered a cow ou tho track. Ho in? stantly blow tho whistlo for brakes, upon the sound of which a dozen cattle rushed | upon the track from tho adjacent bushes. A WONDERFUL ACHE OF COTTON.-Wo learned, yesterday, from a gentleman just up from Eufanln, that tho stalks, bolls and squares in tho brag acre of cotton belonging to Mojor L. P. John? ston, near Eufauln, had becu counted within the last day or two, and that by a close mathematical calculation, tho acre will yield at least five, ond proba? bly eight, 450 pound bales of cotton. Old and experienced plant?i s who were present and examined the cotton stalks, said that the acre would certainly yield Ave bales, and with favorable weather and close picking seven bales would pro? bably bc obtained. This is a most fabu? lous statement, but we are assured that j it is true.-3facon Telegraph. As indicativo of their relative values and importance, tho New York Sun says that of fifty-three exchanges received at that office, contoiniug accounts of tho great Philadelphia fire, all but four an? nounced, "30,000 barrels of whiskey de? stroyed," in displayed bend lines, and made no mention of the attendant loss of life.
