The other evening, two Irishmen, new
to tho country, and belonging to the
better olass of emigrants, arrived in
Toledo late in the evening and stopped
at the Island Houso. They were shown
to a room far np io the building, the
gas. lighted, and thoy were left alone.
Tho weather was bot> the(windows.open,
and the two gentlemen sat down to en?
joy a chat. Soon, attracted by the light
aaa the prospect of a square meal, a
troop of the hungriest of the hungry
Toledo mosquitoes bore down on the ill
fated Hibernians. They fought and
bled, but the enemy constantly received
reinforcements, and the travelers were
in despair. The clerk was summoned,
and asked agonizingly, "Ia there no de?
fence . against these bio od-th i ru ty c ra?
ture?" He told the travelers that if they
put ont their gas and dosed their win?
dows, they would experience relief.
They noted on the suggestion and placed
themselves between the sheets. Jnst as
they began to doze, a lightning-bug,
which had strayed into the room, caught
the eire of one of the travelers. He
roused his companion with a punch:
"Jamie, Jamie, it is no use. Here's one

Bev. Dr. Wightman, of > Kirkamoor,
Scotland, was a simple-minded clergy?
man of the old school. When a young
man he paid his addresses to a lady in
the parish, and his suit was accepted, on
the condition that it met the approval of
the lady's mother. Accordingly, the
doctor waited upon the matron, and,
stating his case, the good woman, de?
lighted at his proposal, passed the usual
Scottish compliment:
"Deed, doctor, you're far ower guid
for our Janet. I'm snre she's no guid
eno' for you."
"Wee!, weel," was the rejoinder, "ye
ken best; so we'll say nae mair aboot it."
No more was said, and the social in?
tercourse of the parties continued on the
same footing' as before. Abont forty
years after Dr. Wightman died an old
bachelor and the lady an old maid.
There was a dnel in Cohoes, N. Y., the
other day. The seconds kindly drew the
balls before tho fire, whioh was manfully
delivered. Eat at the instant of firing
one of the seconds threw a small pebble
against the breast of his principal's op?
ponent, who, supposing he was fatally
wounded, fainted and fell. The other,
seeing the effect of his shot, dropped1"*
weapon and ?led to the woods, and L.
not since been seen. The man who fen
recovered soon afterwards, and upon in?
quiry was told that his antagonist had
been killed by his shot, and Iiis mortal
remains were then reposing beneath the
clods. This in turn alarmed the last
"survivor," and ho also fled to parts un?
known.

sonroe of endless trouble. Flowed under,
they are worth- as much as a dressing of
manure. Beside enriching the soil they
tend to keep it loose. If yon add from
twenty-five to fifty bushels of lime per
acre to the ground, and harrow it in, it
will convert your weeds into plant food.

age, do not pine in your youth?
