In pursuance of this resolution, the Catholic clergy were ejected from their livings, and clergy? men of the QI u$Sh' of England sent over to take tbei. p'ices. This change did not, bo wc vet, occasion any correspond? ing change in tho, religions feelings of j the people, who became rather the more j attached to their ancient faith, according aa their clergy were treated with harsh? ness and injustice. In every other coun? try, where there is an established reli? gion, it is the religion of the majority of the people; but in Ireland tho members of the established choreh in many dis? tricts constitute hardly an appreciable element in the population. But there were a number of estimable English gen? tlemen who needed some respectable means of support, and they were ac? cordingly provided for by organizing a regularly Apostolic Chnrch in Ireland. They sent there several arch-bishops, and some ten or a dozen bishops, who received very handsome incomes from their Irish estates. Tho Aro h-bishop of Armagh and Clogher, for example, about 860,003 a year; the Bishop of DOWD, Connor, and Dromore, some $35,000 or $40,000; the Bishop of Cashel, Emly, Waterford and Lismore, about $35,000, &o. Ten bishops and two arch-bishops received the snug sam of ?50,000, or an average of about $20,000 apiece in gold. Including deans, precentors, chancellors, arch-deacoDs, prebendaries, canons, parochial! clergy, A.c., the Irish people paid out each year about $4,000,000 for the support of these ecclesiastical office? holders. Some of thom-some of tho parish clergy-did not have five parish? ioners. This is the concern which has just been "dis-established" by Parliament, after such a stoat resistance on the part of the Lords and tho old fogy party in the Commons. It is true, tho Irish Churchmen got by tho bill tho bulk of the church property, some $50,000,000 in value, while the Presbyterians, who are nearly as numerous ns the Episcopa? lians, got $2;?00,000, and the Catholics -four-fifths of the people-got nothing. But they got rid of tho system-and that contented them. The eleotion of Walker in this State, and of Souter iu Tennessee, will operate in a similar manner to dis-establish thc ! church 'of - the carpet-baggers iu these much-abused. States. At prosent wc have ! here a Northern Bishop whom wc pay j $5,000 a. year, without ever enjoying bis j episcopal offices. We have a prebendary from the same region-Mr. Levi Edwin Dudly, who bas just resigned a fat bene? fice-whom we pay some $2,100 a year. We have Arch-deacons Burnham, Dor? man and Willoughby-at $3,000 apiece. We have Dean Morton, Dean Bramhall, Dean Olcott, and various other deaus at $2,000 a year. We have Chancellor Bond-at a large and uncertain sum. We have Provost Cbaboon at $4,000. We have Sacristan Wardwell at S2.000. We have Canon Chandler. nt $-, and Chorister Platte at $2,000. And then an innumerable host of rectors, vicars, curates, at salaries- ranging from $100 to $5,000, scattered through thc Parishes from Acooniac to Alleghany, and from Northumberland to Scott. This is the Church of the Puritans in Virginia, which has just been disendow? ed. Like their archetypes in Ireland, they are still gnawing at the carcass, but we hope soon to be rid of them. What a monstrous thing it was to in? undate thia country with strangers, to tho exclusion of our own people-some few of. them, we admit, gentlemen, but a great ' many of them harpies, whose vory countenances would compel them to plead guilty under a criminal prosecu? tion. . But all over the world the spirit of progress is demolishing these monu? ments and citadel of rapacity and greed; and enlightened public opinion is frown? ing upon ecclesiastical bummers, wheth? er they belong to tho Church of England or the Church of the Puritans-whether they march-under the cross or tho carpet? bag. The great Republican party purgeB itself of these scavenger birds, ns the Church of England-that really noble Church, amid all its secularism-purges itself ?f thaii shameful abomination which h|?daOTig disfigured its fair pro? portions^ And now. the voice comos np from Tennessee, that progressive Repub? licanism eschews there thc employment of loree, and penal statuets, and disabil? ities, and establishments, to bring those non-juring, popish malignants to the or? thodox faith. And next, we shall have Mississippi and Texas-until every weight shall have been removed by the irresistible genius of universal dis-estab? lishment. - {Richmond Enquirer and Examiner. A mechanic; in Memphis hos produced a plan for a low pressure steamboat, which he claims will have double the speed of any ono now in use, while it will cost little moro than boats on the old plau. It can also be run at half tho expense for labor and fuel. It is divided into compartments, water and air-tight, and cannot be snagged so as to sink. Fire in the hold can bo confined to a single compartment, and will be readily extinguished by steam, for which suitable apparatus is provided. ?van? There never has existed in this country nt the same time moro thau two great political parties. Thero cannot exist but two now. This is no time for tho formation of a Union or any other party. Thero has existed in this country a great Union pnrty from the beginning, and it exists to-day powerful and great. It stands to? day the bulwark of the Constitution, and only conservator of tho constitutional Union of these States. Under its guid? ing counsels wo increased from less than 5,000,000 to nearly 30,000,000. Its poli? cy swelled tho number of our States from thirteen to thirty-three. It acquired for us every foot of territory, except tho ice barrens of Alaska, which has been added to oar national domain. It took tho banner of our Union and pluutcd it upon our Southern gulf, and Florida be? came ono of tho galaxy of States. It took that banner and planted it upon tho vast territory of Louisiana, an em? pire in itself, and thus extended our pos? sessions towards tho setting sun. It un? furled that bauner upon tho virgin soil of Texas. "Westward still tho star of empire took its way," and, faithful to its true mission of extension and develop? ment, it took that same banner of our Union, and marohing right onward, planted it in glorious triumph upon tho shores of the mighty Pacific, and Utah, New Mexico and California becamo ours forever. The Democratic porty, the true cod only Union party of the country, hos made ours an ocean-bound republic, great, mighty, prosperous and free. In peace it has developed our resources and expanded oar power, and in war it has successfully main'aiued our rights and nobly vindicated our national honor. Under its policy, and by its couusels, in peace and war, the feeble republic of yesterday became one of tho greatest and mightiest among the nations of the earth. Had its warning voice been heed? ed, tho great Stutes of this Union would still have been grappled to each other as with hooks of steel. No debt, no taxa? tion, no oppressive duties would have vexed tho ?and. But under Republican auspices, and to carry out the behests of fanaticism, we expended enough to have built half a dozen Pacific Ronds, n dozen I telegraphs around the world, in accom? plishing tho freedom of a few million negroes. Wo banished tho precious me? tals from our currency, and accumulated nearly 3,000,000,000 ?f debt beside, and all we have to show for it is thc emanci? pation of somo negroes-an emancipa? tion that has completely destroyed them both for their own and others' usefulness -a disrupted Union, a violated Consti? tution, increasing poverty, wido-spread demoralization. Verily, the Republican party is a party of progress, but it is progress downward, not Upward. [Newark (N. J.)
