"Among tho eoouritioa taken by the
burglars, and not yet recovered, are $50,
000 in benda of the Portage Lake and
Lake Superior Ship Canal Company.
These bonds are, secured by a lien apon
300,000"acres of choice mineral lands on
tbe upper 'peninsula of Michigan, and 1
are in all respects a first class security- |
a fact which the enterprising burglars
seem to folly appreciate.
"A short timo ago the President of tho
Bank, Mr. D. B. Martin, received a com?
munication from the present holders of
these bond", transmitted, in a myste?
rious manner, asking what would bel
given for.the return of the bonds. The
President' retarded an answer that he
would give $2,000 for them. To this be |
has received a reply, conched in tho

burglars or their agents express their
surprise at the estimate the bank pats

WHAT GBIT WILL DO.-A subscriber
in Harria County, Ga., writes the Tal
botton Gazette that a young lady of that
County, Miss Carrie A. Benning, bas in
cultivation about five acres of cotton,
which is the best in the neighborhood,
there being plenty of bolls on it tba 20th
of Juno. Miss Carrie planted and
worked this cotton herself, except ono
ploughing, and ft is believed she will
realize three or four bales from the potch.
Miss Benning .was wealthy before the]
war, but new aha sees the sit nation and
is not afraid of it. The man: who is so
fortunate as to marry this lady will have j
