a-battalion of regulars and. two regiments

Jordan from his position near Santiago

regained his position. It is reported
that a foraging party of Cubans, near
Remedias, captured another near Sagua
le Grande. It is feared they were all
executed. The Cuban troops aro freo
from disease, A decisivo action is ex?
pected in about twenty days, which, if
successful, will give the Cubans control
of the Eastern portion of the island.
The Tribune, in an editorial says:
"Wo protest against the exaotion of the
test oath, as meditated by Gen. Canby.
We want the leading conservatives to
take their seats in tho now Legislature,
eWear fidelity to the new Constitution,
and ratify the fifteenth amendment. We
'cant the: Stato admitted thereupon to
representation in Cou g ress, to all the
rights of self-government, and so we are
confident db a very large majority of the
Northern people.
Domestic Newt.
PHILADELPHIA, August 5.-Patterson's
bonded warehouse, foot of Lombard
street, containing 40,000 barrels whiskey,
was burned this morning; the loss will be
abont 87,000,000. The fire is attributed
to the breaking of the floor over the en?
gine room. The streets were flooded
with the burning whiskey, impeding the
firemen. Later advices say that at noon
tho fire was still raging, but there was no
chance of its extending. The loss is now
estimated at $5,000,000. No lives lost.
The total insurance on the whiskev
burned to-day is $2,288,000. The New
York and Eastern oompanies are the
heaviest losers. The London and Globe
Companies lose $180,000; the Imperial
$319,000; the Insurance Company of
North America at Philadelphia $127,000;
Philadelphia companies probable loss
$400,000.
The Juniata hos gone to sea. The
Dictator sails to day. The Constitution
has gone to Norfolk, where she will re?
main as receiving ship. The double-tur?
reted monitor Miantonomah and steamer
Cambridge are fitting out for sea.
LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS, August 5.
A meeting of the Land League was held
to-day, on neutral lands. Speeches were
mode by Hon. Sidney Clarke and others.
F.esolutions were passed, unanimously
denouncing James F. Joy and the United
States Senate and asking Boss and Pome?
roy to resign. They also propose cutting
loose from the Republican party, and
forming a new and independent State
Central Committee. Senator Pomeroy
was burned in effigy.
MEMPHIS, August 5.-Tho election is
progressing quietly. The indications
are that the Democrats will carry the
County by 2,000.
KNOXVILLE, August 2.-Andrew John
. son spoke at Maryville to-day. A crowd
of radicals at the depot greeted him with
insulting remarks. While speaking, the
Stokes radical preacher-wbippers of
Blonnt County got up a crowd to mob
Mr. Johnson, with the declared inten?
tion of breaking up the speaking and
riding him on a rail. They made three
charges on the stand, bat fell bock, awed
each time by the firm attitude of Mr.
Johnson and his friends. There were
several knook down fights and considera?
ble tumult but no bloodshed. Johnson
spoke three hours, and made a telling
Sleech-a speech similar to others in the
tate.

Edgefield, S. C., are that Charles and J.
D. Cresswell, who left this city yester?
day, were shot this morning, near Edge
field. The former was killed instantly,
and the latter was serioubly, if not mor?
tally, wounded. Tho affair was entirely

ont of family trouble
