the .people, and press of tho Southern
States, for the very kind and flattering
reception and liberal patron ngo which
they nave everywhere accorded to him
during the past season. As there is
much misapprehension existing in the
minds Of Northern people regarding the
true state, of affairs at the South, and j
muon doubt aa to the reception Northern
people would meet with should they
visit that section, I can honestly state as !
the result of my observation during our
extended tour of over six months ]
through tho States of Tennessee, Geor?
gia, South Carolina, Alabama, Missis?
sippi, Louisiana and Texas, that the
stories of outrages, so frequently seen in
Northern papers, are generally emana?
tions from the brains of evil-minded per?
sons, "written for effect and having no
foundation in fact.
The Southern people, generally, are as
well disposed toward, treat as kindly and
wolcomo as cordially, and all well dis?
posed persons who may come among
them either as permanent settlers or os
transient visitors, as would the people of
ony other section of our country. They
have suffered a great deal during the
few past years, and have by no means
fully recovered from tho effects of the
war, but they are hopeful for the future,
and to all well meaning people they will
extend the right hand of fellowship
irrespective of the section of country
from which said people may come.

THE GERMANS.-There is evidently a
heaving tide among the Germans, as?
suming greater proportions daily. They
claim that this year they will cast about
35,000 votes at the next election, of
which not 1,500 will fall to the Republi?
can side. Hence they insist that in the1
distribution pf offices moro regard shall
be paid them than ever heretofore.
They have already scores of candidates I
in the field, who are pressing forward
vigorously. And, for the information of I
all concerned, it may as well be said j
now, that in those districts where the
German votes control, and even where it j
only holds the balance of power, the
"big Injun of Tammany" may just as j
Well , give in. For '"peaceably if they
can, forcibly if they must," tho Germans1
this year are determined to break the
slate, uniese they occupy a goodly por?
tion of it.
Another movement is to be regarded.
The German workingmen in this city are
beginning to organize by wards for po*
litical action next fall. They have al?
ready a daily political morning paper,
which is advocating.this move. Thus a |
very large class of voters will pass from
under the control of the Tammany
sages, and, unless they act with great
circumspection, they may, "unbeknown
to themselves," as Lincoln said, find the
pius knocked from uudcr them. Through?
out tho whole field, wherever we look,
the Germans are moving for political in?
fluence and power by claiming repre?
sentatives of their nationality in promi?
nent offices.
This is, .perhaps, tho principal trouble I
Tammany will have to encounter. It's a
very big elephant, and it will take all thc
ingenuity and diplomacy of the great
Peter to handle it.-New York Herald.
