system'of unblushing rascality that pre?
vails in tho -Executive and Legislature
departments of our sister State. It says :
The rascality of officials 'in Florida is
unparalleled. A number of Yankee ad?
venturers, with headquarters at Jack?
sonville, have formed a "ring" for the
robbery of tjie State on a mammoth
scale. Recently they conceived tho idea
of procuring an appropriation of ?3,000,
000 or more of State bonds for the osten?
sible construction of a railroad from the
Chattahoochee River to the waters of
Escnmbia Bay; and it is said the Go?
vernor was paid 88,000 to induoe him to
convene an extra session of the Legisla?
ture, so that a bill might be introduced
and passed, making the required appro?
priation. Upon the assembling of tho
Legislature, the "ring" proceeded to the
work of bribing the members in the
most scientific and unblushing manner.
New York drafts were distributed with a
lavish hand, and the recipients boldly
offered them for sale on the streets of
Tallahassee. "When the pockets of tho
"truly loil" legislators wero sufficiently
filled, the necessary bill was passed and
promptly approved by the Governor.
Some of its provisions, however, were
obnoxious to the "ring," and to remedy
the evil, the most outrageous fraud ever
committed was resorted to. Previous to
the publication of tho law, tho "ring"
caused the offioials of that Stato-by
what means is best known to them-to
mutilate, actually erase such clauses as
were objectionable clauses that, in a
measure, interfered with the high-hand?
ed robbery of the people. This fraud, of
course, was promptly discovered, and
at the instance of two prominent citizens
of Tallahassee, an injunction was served
upon the Governor, restraining him
from the issuing of the authorized bonds.
This transaction is bnt another evi?
dence of the baseness of heart and reek
leas indiff?rence to all principles of honor
influencing adventurers who come South
to fatten npon the resources of the peo?
ple. Is there no law to punish, no
hand to strike down the scheming rognes
who thus pollute and disgrace the State
?and steal the substances of an unpro?
tected people? Tho thieving "ring" is
certainly deserving of censure, but it is
against tho officials of tho Stato, the Go?
vernor, his subordinates and thc Legis?
lature, that the anathemas of the people
should be hurled.
LOVE'S STRATAGEM.-Among tho bills
of indictment returned by tho grand
jury in the quarter sessions lately, was
one charging a young man with "send?
ing a false despatch." When Mr. Ha?
gart, Assistant-District Attorney, came
to investigate the matter, he discovered
that the young man was engaged to bo
married to a young lady whose parents
were opposed to the match. In order to
prevent the union, the parents sent
the yonng lady to some friends in the
"West, The young man, not to be out?
witted, sent a despatch West, setting
forth the serious illness of the mother
of his affianced. In response, the young
lady came to Philadelphia, where she was
met by the young man, and both visited a
clergymgn, where the marriage ceremony
was performed. This inoensed the pa?
rents, and hence the charge. The Dis?
trict Attorney abandoned the case, sub?
mitting the bill to tho jury without
evidence, and a verdict of not guilty was

tions against General Grant touching
the appointment of his family connec?
tions to office. Do these fault-finders
know anything of the Scriptures? or do
they forget that "ho who provideth not
for his own household is worse than au
infidel?" General Grant, if we aro not
mistaken, is a hickory Methodist and a
firm believer in this Methodist dogma;
and besides, it does not interfere with
the principles of the Chicago platform,
nor with the constitution of our fathers.
What more is needed for his defence in
providing for his family? Moreover, is
it not a Napoleonic and Jacksonian De?
mocratic idea?-New York Herald.
