Wo paint a dark picture of ber future desti? ny; but what brighter view can we anti-" cipato when we consider the artists? When we see those gentlemen who wore onoe ber guardians, of whom even Caro? lina boasted with pride as her sons, sup? planted by a vile clan who ignore honor and are dead to all the nobler feelings of man, we feel assured that extremes have met; and whereas the one watched with jealous eye 'the welfare of the institu? tion, the other, moved by hatred and re? sentment, will seek ber degradation. Until lately, wo were in hopes that the [Trastees would refrain from taking any direct action against the institution; but j a recent act hos revealed their future policy-I speak of the dismissal of Mr. Orchard from the position of Bursar and Marshal, and the election of Jim Davis, a negro, of no learning and less charac? ter. Indeed, we congratulate Mr. O. on this high compliment, though the Uni? versity will miss his valuable services. We deem this but a preparatory step to vacating the chairs of the Faculty, which will be done as soon as they can find men of their own stripe to fill them. For they feel oonfldent that the gentlemen now occupying those positions will not so belie their past history as to instruct the vile gang who may apply for admis? sion. And although we possess the strongest imaginative powers, we cannot conceive of the Hon. Chairman of that body, whose stentorian voice has been beard in the Senate ohamber in the proudest days of the ropublio, lecturing to a dusky gang of dirty negroes on the departed glory of ancient Borne. COLUMBIAN. COTTON STEALING IN NEW YORK.-A correspondent writes os follows to tho j New York Journal of Commerce: Complaint is often made of losses in the weight of cotton. To-day, while looking oat of my office window, I saw a solution of this whole difficulty. Oppo? site there is a cotton warehouse, (and there are several others in the neighbor? hood,) and I saw the thieves stealing the ootton as it came from the warehouse. The word stealing tells the whole story 1 All banda steal. The oartmen, the labor? ers, the samplers, and hosts of girls and boys, and men and women, that are hanging around, all steal. And the warehousemen themselves wink at it, if they do not profit by this wholesale steal? ing. If yon will spend a few minutes at my office, almost any day, you may wit? ness all that I have detailed above. At the same time, probably, you may see a policeman leisurely walking by, ignorant of all that is going on. A short time since, I called the attention of a police? man to a oase of cotton stealing, and he told me that he would not arrest a cot? ton thief if he saw one in the act. His excuse was that the Polioe Justice would not notice him, and that he would get nothing bat abase for his pains, and that if be persisted in doing his duty, he could not keep his place three months. (This is a dreadful condition of things. In my neighborhood are several places where this stolen cotton is openly jought, and the thieves can bo seen going in and out at all times of the day, ind their business is no secret. This pty will suffer in its business, unless this ling is stopped. It is not safe to send Iotton to New York for sale. I would ot clo so, and would ndvise my friends ot to do so, anless a stop could bo put this wholesale stealing.
