WASHINGTON, July 1.-A largo crowd
assembled before tue Metropolitan Ho?
tel, to-night, on the occasion of a sere?
nade to ex-president Johnson. The
band having played a tune, Mr. John?
son appeared on tho balcony, and wan
received with applause.
John E. Norris, of Washington, intro?
duced >.him as having been known for
many years as the great champion of the
Democracy of the United States, and ns
having fought many a battle aud won
many n victory in behalf of constitu?
tional freedom. Mr. Johnson then
climbed over a rail and took his stand
near the reporters' table on the balcony.
He WAS again greeted with applause,
and said: It was not hin purpose to make
a speech, but merely to tonder his thanks,
his heart-felt thanks, for this cordial
welcome on his return to Washington.
It was not necessary for him, on this oc?
casion, to recapitulate or rehearse the
arguments he heretofore made in behalf
of the people and in behalf of thoso
great principles which should be main?
tained and preserved by those calling
themselves free, patriotic and intelligent.
In taking the stand he did, ho believed
ho was doing his duty. He bad tried to
sot (on. principle and in vindication of
principles. He had collected facts and
arguments which; in times gone by, were
considered unanswerable and irresistible.
They had been presented for the con?
sideration of Congress and the country,
but it appeared they did not avail much
during the time he had presented thom.
However, in his politics, as iu his reli?
gion, when his facts gave out and his
reasons failed him, he drew pretty large?
ly on his faith, and his faith was yet
strong and unbroken. The time would
come, and that ere long, when the
American people will be aroused to the
importance and high sense of preserv?
ing the great principles which havebeon
overslaughed and trampled under foot
so long. He would say, let us hnve
faith. He believed a gleam of the morn?
ing of redemption could now bo seen.
He thought the time was coming when
the Constitution of our fathers would be
restored. It was not necessary for him
to call the attention of this intelligent
audience to the struggles and contests
transpiring within the last four years.
It was not necessary for him to point
their attention to the judicial department
of the Government, to show that uuder
the domination of an usurping Congress
that even the judiciary of the country
was made to quail and shrink before it.
It was not necessary to turn attention to
the other end of the avenue, nor was it
necessary to do more than to point to
the tyrannical body called Congress,
which attempted to absorb every single
power of the President. He had called
them tyrants standing with the mailed
heel of power on the necks of the free?
men of the United States, endeavoring
to blot out tho lines whioh separated tho
States, and to wipe out tho other two
co-ordinate branches of the Government,
and in this Congress stood omnipotent.
RCMOKS OF WARS.-Rumors are preva?
lent abroad that France will soon bo con?
vulsed with internal ?var. This report
has.arisen through the fact that the rail?
road carriage factories iu France have
recently received orders to supply GO.00O
wooden seats, each provided with four
strong cords, so that they can be sus
?ended from the roofs of freight cars,
t is inferred that these seats are intend?
ed to facilit?t J the hasty transport of
large bodies of troops to different parts
of France.
A reward of 810,000 is offered for the
capture, dead or alive, of Sam Hilde?
brand, the Missouri desperado. An arm?
ed posse has been organized, under a
Sroclamation of the Governor of that
tate, to search for and arrest him. He
has killed over eighty men, and boasts
that he will not yield until he has made
it an even hundred.
Yesterday, five laborers at the Hoosac
tunnel accidentally fell eighty feet, to
the bottom of the central shaft. Two
were instantly killed, and a third one
mortally wounded.
