EDITOR: IQ nearly every institution of learning, I believe, an "Ugl/Club" baa been deemed indispensable, io order Hutt tbose who, in the gonoral distribu? tion of good looks, may' have been un? fortunately forgotten, might join in one common bond of sympathy. When the South Carolina College w&e ia its pris? tine glory, the "Ugly Club" was. in full blast, and many laughable Incidents occurred which will never bo forgotten. But when the University was organised, the times wore so unsettled, and so many difficulties bestrewed the path of the students, that the olub was entirely for? gotten. However, this year-perhaps, because there were a greater number of unfortunates than usual, or because they were not so engrossed in thoir literary duties, some of the students conceived thc iden of re-establishing this tites honored society. At first, the seoret was only entrusted to u few; the times and place of meeting were unknown to the uninitiated, aud it was rnmored that there was a club of this sort organizad. At first, it was regarded merely as a myth, existing only in the fancies of a few of tbe ugliest among the students, and the Ugly Club was tho subject of sport. But as time progressed, tho prospouts of the club brightened. Several new members were added to its list, nntil it ombrnced students from all parts of tbc State, some of whom could: compare fa? vorably iu homeliness with anything in the country. But lhere were still some whe belonged to the doubting sort, who re? fused to believe tho "Ugly Club" to ht anything but an unmitigated humbug. But all doubts were laid at reston Monday morning. Knowing not only what to sni but also how to say it, and accompany ing his words with most nppropriul looks, tones and gestures, ho succeeds as men raroly do. D. tben thanked tbe audieuoe for their attendance, called on them to ratify the eboico of, the Ugly Club, and adjourned the meeting. Thus ended tbe first anniversary of the club. Much credit is due to the originators of the movement, and to the B. D. and the orator, for having so well carried the affair through. It is difficult to say which uns tlf. greater source of amuse? ment, the oration itself or the distribu? tion of prizes afterwards. The admira? ble manner of Mr. Wright, aud the spirit in which the prizes woro received, caused the evening to pass off without a single uupleosit?t incident lo mar the enjoyment. Of tbe 100 and more fillibusters landed upon the const of the District of Baracoa, the Santiago pupers nuuonnce that most of them have either been killed or captured in the mountains of Las Cuchillas; that the captured, some twenty-five in num? ber, ?re on their wny to Sauting , and that proparations were being made in that city for their execution. Governor 'Lntome having resolved to have them ul) shot within twenty-four hours after ar? rival. One-half are said to be Cubans and the other half Americans, Germans, Dominicans und Mexicans. A private letter from an English resident of San? tiago gives somewhat different par t iou - j lars of this fillibustoring expedition from those of the Spanish papers. Thc first lot, ac? cording to tho letter, had never been at? tacked by the Spaniard1-, but thc second was forced by a superior number u? sol? diers to abandon Guaduuavayn on the Otb, and take refuge in the Cuchillas Mountains, where they were followed, and nearly all killed or captured, losiug all tho war material they had with them, consisting of four mountain howitzers, j 800 Remington lilies, and 00,000 car? tridges. In New York, a few days since, tho authorities, learning that a large expedi? tion was about to sail for Cuba, arrested its commander, Colonel W. O. C. Byan, and several of bis subordinates. On Wednesday night, ?viten an United Statos Marshal named Dowley was taking Col. Ryan to jail in a carriage, tho prisoner induced bis captor to go with bim in search of a mau to go on the bail bond of the former. Not duding the man nt the hotel, Ryan said be must be just around at the Casino, corner of Houston and Mott streets, where tho Cuban re? cruits have made their headquarters of late. Tho carriage was driven round, and, on reaching the door, Ryan sprang ont and rushed upstairs, closely followed by officer Dowley. As soon as Colonel Ryan entered the room in the Casino, the men cheered him. Seeing Dowley, they seized a blanket, which they threw over bis head, when Ryan, aided by the mon, proceeded to tie bis arms behind him, gag him and^ tie bis feet together. They then tonk bim np stairs to the third story, and loft bim in a small room. After this bad beeu accomplished, Ryan, under cover of the darkness, succeeded in gettiug bis men together, nnd em? barked, with a large force, for Cuba. WHAT IS THE MATTER?-A gentleman residing in Columbia, a short time since, wrote to a merchant of this city to scud bim some goods, telling bim that if be did not receive notification of their being obtained by the 21st of this month, il. would bo useless to do anything fur? ther in tho matter. The goods were ob? tained, nnd a letter was written and posted here, on the 17th inst., iuforming the gentleman in Columbia of the fact. Thereupon, they marched np the stair? way, and took (heir seats on the guard as cabin passengers. The captain po? litely intimated that this was against the rules; that boats were under a construct? ive obligation to the Government to con? vey soldiers from point to point, but under it they were only entitled to a steerage, not a cabin passage, and he would: require them to descend to thu main deck. They at once declared that they would not go-that thpy were enti? tled to all the privileges of the most favored class, and would maintain these rights at all huzurds. Occupying this determined attitude, a spirit of opposi? tion wus aroused, and the captain de? clared that they must either pay full cabin fure, or be forced to retire to the I main deck. Ia response, they fixed their bayonets on their guns, and threatened vengeance against any ninu or meu who attempted to enforce the captain's or? ders. The excitement became intense, but meanwhile the boat left Baton Bouge, and proceeded on to Plaqneraine. There the captain went on shore and made athduvit of the facts before a civil magistrate, and the olHcers of the law went ou board to arrest tho independent and deflaut darkies. They, however, still persisted and resisted, using their weapons in a tneuucing manner, and their tongues ns if they were the sole representatives of Uncle Sam's authority on earth. After a long parley, they were rushed upon, made prisoners, and conveyed to tho lock np, und tho boat steamed on to this city, minus her two colored passengers.
