AN iE BIA T.. RIDE ON A BYCICLK.-At
the Mechanics' Pu vii lion yesterday, Paul
Martinette accomplished one of the most
perilous feats over attempted nt a public !
exhibition in this oity, by riding a velooi
pede backward and forward ob a single j
-wire the whole length of tbnt mammoth
building. The wire was stretched from
the front entrance of the pavillion to tho
old picture gallery ot tho back, a distance I
of 200 feet. In the centro of the foun?
tain was placed an upright post to hold
up the sag of tho wire, so that tho veloci?
pede had to poss over a rather steep
inclination to get over this post. Marti?
nette, ou the first velocipede ever used in
tho pavillion, run the machine atu smart
paco to the top of tho post, and remained
there several seconds, when he started
down the incline on the other side, and
balanced the. velocipede at tho lowest
level on the wire, and then came tho
whole distance back to tho starting piuco
without turning himself or the machine.
When it is taken into consideration that
the wire, less than half an inch thick,
was suspended twenty feet from the floor,
and a stumble would probably have !
been fatal, some idea of tho peril of the
feat may bo formed. It was performed
with as much easo as if the velocipede
had been on the floor.
\San Francisco Clironicle, May 16.
The St. Paul (Minnesota) Dispatch
says: "We learn from a gentleman who
came down from tho Chippewa agency
that a delegation of some twenty or thirty
of those Indians are on their way down
to St. Paul to have a grand dog feast.
They have learned that some twenty or
thirty fine fat dogs aro killed every day
by the police, and the bodies buried.
They think this is a shocking and awful |
waste of food. Dog meat is a great deli?
cacy-with them. They propose to en?
camp in the park, near thc City Hall,
and live on dog meat until tho harvest of j
canines ceases, and then return homo fat
and happy."
A lady of onr acquaintance, who has
just returned from passing the winter in
Florida, states that n planter mado his
appearance in town from the depths of
the everglades, bringing with him two
negroes for sale ? Ho was actually igno?
rant that there had been a war! Imagine
his feelings at the sudden depreciation of
his movable property I
A Hartford paper thinks that one quart
of whiekey a day is as much ns auy good
civilized lud?an needs; nud that, in this
respect, the Indian is more moderate in
his demands and appetites than certain
Radical Congressmen nud Washington
office-holders.
A eirene in Chicago was so crowded the
other night that the people encroached
on the ring, nud the services of au
elephant Were culled into requisition "to
tread on intrusive corns."
Goneral McClellan will have finished,
and will offer to the Government, the |
Stevens Battery in about seventeen
months from now.
The Sacramento papers contain long
accounts of the death of John C. Heenan,
"The Benicia Boy."

HOW HOSTETTBli'S BlTTUnS CUKE
DYSPEPSIA-THE WHOLE STORY IN A
NUT-SHELL.-Tho office of the stomach is to
convert tho food into a cream-like semi fluid,
called chymo. This is effected partly by tho
action of a eolvont, called tho gastric jnice,
which exudes from tho coating of the stomach,
and partly by a mechanical movement of that
organ, which churns, a? it were, tho dissolving
aliment. Tho chyme passes from the stomach
Into the duodenum, or entrance to tho bowels,
whore it is subjected to tho action of tho bile,
and tho nutritious portion of it converted into
a fluid called chyle, which eventually becomes
blood.
Now, it is evident that if tho groat solvent,
tho gastric juico, ia not produced in sufficient
quantity, or if tho mochanioal action of tho sto?
mach is not sufficiently brisk, the first process
of digestion will bc but imperfectly porformod.
It is also cloar that if the livor, which plays
such an important part in changing the nou?
rishing portion of the chyme into tho material
of tho blood, is congested, or in any unnatural
condition, tho second process will not bo tho?
roughly accomplished. Tho result of tho two
failures is dyspepsia, complicated with bilious?
ness.
Tho modo in which HOSTETTER'S BIT
TEE'S operate in such cases is this: They in?
vigorate the cellular membrane of the sto?
mach, which evolves the gastric juice, thereby
insuring an ample sufficiency of tho fluid tu
completely dissolve tho food. They also aot
upon tho nerves of tho stomach, causing an
acceleration of the mechanical movement ne?
cessary to roduce the food to a homogenous
mass. They also act specifically upon tho
liver, strengthening it, and so enabling it to
produce an ample and regular supply of hilo,
for the purpose of converting thc nutritious
particles of the chyme into chyle, and promote
tho passage through tho bowels of tho useless
dobris.
In this way HOSTET TE B'S BITTERS euro
dyspepsia and liver complaint. Tho explana?
tion is plain, simple, philosophical aud true.
