Mule Riding lu Florida-How a. Stw
Yorker Enjoyo lt.
A New York correspondent writing
from Fernandina, Fla., says:
The boys insisted that I needed relaxa?
tion. My health required it. I had a
pretty fair article of health, I thought;
enough to last mo as long as I lived. But I
must accumulate a stock for future use.
The South was tho place to get it. And
riding was healthy. The sand is too
deep to rido, oxcopt on horseback, so I
thought I would take a ride. I applied
to tho livery mnn for a horse. He bud
one. He looked sorrowfully at me, as
though he pitied mc. Did I ever ride a
mule? I never had. Ho had as good
riding; horses as were ever saddled; but
if I wanted a "Bock Me to Sleep, Mo?
ther," style of ride, I would take amule.
I don't consider myself a first class judge
of mules. I had some vague notions in
regard to them; supposed they would do
a large amount of work with n very little
feed, and were immortal. I hud read of
one being driven over the same route, by
the same boy, for eighty-seven years,
and he was a young mule yet.
Bring forth the mule. Tho mule was
brought. He was a meek looking cuss;
a perfect "Uriah Heep" of a mule, so fur
as "Umbleness" was concerned. At least
that was the view I took of him. He
was saddled, and I mounted. For a mile
or two he paced beautifully. I thought
those old monks I had read about knew
what they were doing when they travel?
ed on mules. I had a high respeot for
their judgment. Just then my mule be?
gan to show symptoms-symptoms of
what I did not know. I found out.
Dropping his head between his legs, his
heels described a parabolic curve, or a
diabolio curve, or some other infernal
curve, in the air, and I got off nud sat
on the gronnd. I got off over his bead,
and I did it quick. I'm not so old but I
can get off un animal of that kind as
quick as a boy. Then I looked at tho
mule to see if he was hurt. Ho didn't
appear to be. Then I inquired aron ml
to see how I was. I reported an abra?
sion on the left hip, and a contusion on
the lower end of my back. Then I
thought I would pronounce u left-handed
blessing on that mule, and on bis forefa?
thers and foremothers before him, and
on his children after him. But I didn't.
I wondered if ho would stand fice. If I
had a pistol I would have put the muzzle
to his ear uud tried him. Not that I was
hostile toward him, but I was afraid
somebody might take a ride on him somo
day and get hurt. But I had uo pistol,
and so that benevolent nud sanguinary
iden was frustrated. Then I gol. up and
shook thc dust off my feet, ami brushed
the sand off my trousers, us a testimony
against that place. Then I led the mule
carefully home, and stated my case to
the livery man. But when I looked that
he should offer to send for a doctor, or a
Samaritan, to do mo up in a rag, and
pour olive oil and champagne, on my
bruise, he only laughed. And his mau
that he hud to help him laid down on a
bench and laughed Mien rolled oft' the
beuch uud laughed-uud I tstood holding
the mule-then I laughed. It was ridi?
culous. But I've learned a little wisdom.
Next time I ride on horseback, it will be
a different kind of a beast from a bogus
jackass.
The Abbe Deguorry, preaching to
1 fashionable Paris against the fashions,
during Lout, exclaimed: "Oh, my sis?
ters, what can be the meaning of the
slight covering you wear on your shoul?
ders? What can, every evening, bo tho
motive of the absence of sleeves to your
dresses? With these eyes have I beheld
ladies of the most irreproachable charac?
ter spending their whole evening in
catching at their shoulder-straps lest
thoir dresses should fa'l off entirely; and
this is not from any feeling of propriety,
but from tho dread oi inconvenience."
