Rufus W. Peckham, of Albany, ODO of the justices of the Supreme Court. They are studying law, with tho intension of being admitted to tho bar. The Chicago Legal News is conducted by a lady, Mrs. Brod well, and, the Law Transcript of this city says, with ability, discrimination and oonr tesy, though it confesses its repugnance to women traveling out of their domestic sphere, especially into the "hard and crab? bed and uncongenial domain of law." But, why should we not have Portias in modern as well as ancient times-in America as well as in Venice?-Baltimore Sun. -o REMARKABLE PRESENTIMENT.-At Law? rence, Mass., about six weeks ago, a resi? dent, who had been sick for some time, told his friends a dream that he had the night I before. It was that he was very Boon to j leave this world, and take with him his grand-sou, then a healthy boy at school. About two weeks after, the Iud was taken sick, and the grand-father was so firmly convinced that his dream would be fulfilled, that he warned those about him that medi? cine would do the boy no good. The lad died a day or two ago, notwithstanding all efforts to save him, and his relative re? marked that he should follow him in a few hours. He died the next day. -o-1- I BUTLER'S OPINION OP A WAR WITH ENG? LAND.-General Butler looks upon a war with England as a measure of national economy, as it would prevent fnrther im? portations, which just now are the most se? rious drain that the country has to endure, and as the war would be a naval conflict, it wonld, consequently, be tbe moBt oheaply conducted and best. Commerce nnder the English flag would enable the United States to pay its war expenses from captures. -o We always respect old age, except when stuck with a pair of tough chickens. The corporation of tho South Carolina Central Railroad-to connect Sumter and j Gourdin's-has been organized, by electing Hon. E. E. Dickson, of Manning, chair? man; Dr. H. G. Fox, of Oro, Treasurer, and Mr. H. D. Corbett, Secretary. The Executive Committee, consisting of Dr. Fox, Mr. E. C. Green, and Mr. J. H. Feri ter, have appointed commissioners to open books in New York and in this State, nnd other arrangements have been made to give thc enterprise a fair and speedy start. -o SOUTH CAKOMNIANS ABROAD.-Tho Edin- ! burg Scotsman, of March 31, published in the prize list, for tho session of 1868 and . Gray, one of Georgia's UL' 'est daugh? ters, hus, by her own superhuman efforts, raised thc money, collected and re-interred the bodies of l,?(J?of our "Boys in Grey" in the cemetery at Franklin, Tenu., who were killed in the terrible battle around that | place. Long may she live to bo loved and honored by every true Southron. -o The Texas news summary of the New Or? leans Picayune, of the lGth, .says: "Several more desperadoes, viz: Hays, j Brownlow, Meyer, Arc, have come to an untimely end within tho last three weeks. The people are up in arms hunting these characters to the death, and they must either bite the dust or seek some other clime." James Brooks, a wife-poisoner in the Connecticut State Prison, committed sui? cide by hanging himself in his cell some? time before light Saturday morning. He was serviug out a sentence for the murder of an old man named Bradley, who kept a small jewelry store in Hartford, on Thanks? giving night, 1867. The residents of Allendale, S. C., are agi? tating the question of a new County to be formed out of the lower part of Barnwell and the upper pnrt of Beaufort. This mea? sure deserves to succ 3, as we learn that some of the citizens of Beaufort County are compelled at present to ride eighty miles to attend court. I The New York Herald advises the South I ern people very seriously to let politics alone, and attend to their material interests. That is like tbe fellow who advised the man on the gallows to 6top kicking and attend to his respiration. "The oldest man in the world" has just died in Poland. He had just entered his 139th year. Le Si?cle says that at eighty bis hair was quite white, and afterwards be? came of a brown shade. In St. Louis, on Thursday last, a heavy iron safe, weighing fully 1,800 pounds, fell upon three workmen, who were engaged in hoisting it into a building, owing to the snapping of the rope, and killed two of them, and badly wounded tbe third. Wm. Edwards, a Welshman, was attacked by a negro field-hand in Isle of Wight County, Va., on Saturday, and killed by a blow of a hoe. The murderer escaped. The New York papers say that Edwin Booth and Miss Mary McVickar are to bo married early in June, at the house of Mr. J. H. MoVickar, Long Branch. Seward and son, it is said, intend to make a visit to their Alaska purchase, and leave for that new territorial acquisition next June by way of tho Pacific Railroad. Tba Central Labor Union of Newark have decided to give Senator Sprague n reception during his visit next month. The Springfield Republican calla Sickies' appointment "a disgrace and calamity to the country."
