EDITOR: Tho influences of our spring climate and seasons havo put my mental machinery to evolve a few thoughts respect? ing the iuterests and operations of tho soil. By reference to tho early developments of our farming notions South in planning and preparing for tho coming crop, it is evident that a largo cotton crop was intended, influ? enced by tho idea, of the so-called high price of cotton. Wo use the term so-called, be? cause, when wc take into consideration tho specie value of tho curreucy; tho price of most articles of food; tho cost of labor, tax, Arc., the price is not so high, after all. Doubtless over-selfishness and an impatient desire to grow suddenly rich again, under? lie the peculiar preparations for the forth? coming crop. Hence, the influences brought to bear upon tho farmers to multiply tho uso of these fertilizers have had such a gene? ral and astounding effect. A great cotton crop was determined upon, to the compara? tive neglect of corn. This is a doubtful policy at best. Some timely warnings were thrown out occasionally by the press, and a few conservative observers of a philosophi? cal turn of mind gave cautious hints, but they had but little eflect. The guano fever on thc brain had set in, became contagious and infectious, aud made n sweep over this whole couutry. Woll, it is an ill wiud that hlow? no one any good. The expectations aro not likely to he realized. The powers of nature are already interfering, and the injudicious application of these fertilizers have also notably failed. Tho continuous cold, frost and repeated rains, (in mnny places heavy, washing und leaching,) must necessarily have a damaging effect upon tho manurial operation, even where best ap? plied. It is said that the waters of tho last swelled rivers gave out the smell of guano tinctures. From these various causes stands of cotton have failed to an alarming extent Some aro acting widely aud replanting in corn, but others are running tho chances, whisting up cotton seed and replanting them, at tho 17th of May. This may do on strong land, a thriving season aud late fall. These fertilizers are, in reality, only stimu? lators, not improvers of thu soil. Even where scientifically applied, their effect is to arouse tho natural energies of the land, to contribute its quota to the plant for that year ouly, aud thus servo to exhaust tho na? tive energies of tho soil that much sooner. In such agricultural movements, we are re? minded of tho fable of the man who had a goose that laid a golden egg each day, (well enough, oue would think,) but this lucky proprietor grow impatient, and put his wits to work how to reach the ultimatum at once. A supposed happy thought struck him, and, resolved upon a surgical, not j chemical, Operation, ho ripped open tho gold-laying goose, but nias! the result was the destruction of tho source of his gradual accumulation of wealth. Tho moral is the same iu both cases, very nearly. Mother earth feeds well, but don't try to over-run her native energies all at once by au un? timely impatieuco to become suddenly rich. Header, do not understand the writer as opposed to the use of manures on exhausted lands, nor even proper fertilizers. Use them judiciously; but to do this requires study und tho acquisition of knowledge re? quisite to understand the nature, constitu? tion and wants of your soil, for the raising of the specific plants. You should know the prevailing ingredients of the fertilizers aud manures. They might require com? mixing to meet tho wauts of your laud and the kind of plant you wish to produce. When all these points arc brought to bear upon your farming operations, and your tillage, of deep or shallow ploughing, adapted accordingly, you may expect to im? prove your soil and increase your products per acre. Add to all this patience, and ob? serve the workings and teachings of nature. "Hons" has spoken once, and may ngain, right or wrong. The public is at liberty to judge for itself.
