The slave trade, now carried on along tho
White Nile and the borders of Abyssinia, is
about to be destroyed, by an expedition
under the well-known traveler Sir Samuel
Baker, acting by authority of a commission
from the Viceroy of Egypt. Baker will
have 1,500 soldiers under his command, and
will have at his disposal river steamers and
other suitable means for transportation. Ho
will advance up the Nile, destroying the de?
pots of the slave dealers, and on reaching
the Albert Nyanza, will launch a steam flo?
tilla on that lake, and thoroughly explore
the neighboring region. The wife of Sir
Samuel Baker will accompany him.

A Pittsburg toper, on being consigned to
the lock-up the other day, gave his name as
Abe Lincoln. On being told that ho must
give his tr no name, and further informed
that the late Mr. Lincoln was not addicted
to drink, he said his name was TJ. S. Grant,
and ho was positive that party drank. He
passed.
The building No. 520 Broadway, New
York, occupied as hat and fur stores by
Kingsbury, Abbott, Gay & Co. and L. Sc
M. Glaser Sc Co., was destroyed by fire on
Monday night last. Loss about $70,000.
During the past winter not a flake of snow
fell in Portland, Oregon. Only three or
four nights did ice form, and then only of
the thickness of window-glass. Sowing and
planting were going on ail winter.
