Acts Passed by the State Legislature.
An Act to prevent andpunish Duelling.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and
House of Representatives of the Slate of South
Carolina, nota met and sitting in General As?
sembly, and by the aitOiority of the same, That
every person who shall challengo another
to fight at sword, pistol, rapier, or any
other dangerous weapon, or who shall ac?
cept any such challenge, shall, for every
such offence, on conviction thereof, bo dc
Srived of the right of suffrage, and be disa
led forever from holding any office of profit
or honor udder this State, and shall be im?
prisoned in the Penitentiary for a term not
exceeding two years, at the discretion of the
Court.
SEC. 2. That every person who shnll
willingly or knowingly carry or deliver auy
such chulleuge, in writing, or verbally de?
liver any message iutended as, or purport?
ing to be, such challenge, or who shall be
present at tho fighting of any duel as a se?
cond or aid, or give counteuanco thereto,
shall, for every such offence, on conviction
thereof, be forever disabled from holding
any office of profit or honor under this

tentiary for a term not exceediug two years,
at the discretion of the Court.

Protective Union Association, of Cliarleston.

Edwards, Richard Groen, Anthony Grant,

hereby made and declared to be a body
politic and corporate, by the name and style
of the Longshoremen's Protective Union
Association, of Charleston.
SEC. 2. That the association aforesaid
shall hove succession of officers and mem?
bers according to its. by-laws, and shall have
power to make by-laws, not repugnant to
tho laws of the land, and to have, nse and
keep a common seal, and the same to alter
at will, to sue and be Sued, and plead and
be impleaded, in any Court in this State.
It is hereby empowered to retain, possess
and enjoy nil such property, real and per?
sonal, as it may possess, or bo entitled to,
or which shall hereafter he given, bequeath?
ed to, or in any manner acquired by it, and
to sell, alien or transfer tho same.
SEC. 3. That this Act shall ba h public

Spring Kaahlona.
We compile from the latest fashion maga?
zines the following interesting information
relativo to the styles of dress, &c, now
coming into vogue, which we publish for the
perusal of our fair readers:
MANNER OF V. AKIN O DRESSES.
Corsages are of medium length, and round
at the waist. Shoulder seams are short and
high, defining the slope of the shoulders.
The two darts in each front are short, but
taken very deep, to make an easy, tapering
shape. Side seams aro directly under tho
arm. Forms in tho back aro stitchod on
the outside, and are an inch apart nt thc
belt. Open front with reverso, shawl-shaped
surplice, with fullness from the shoulders to
the belt, square necks, and tho broad sailor
collar of the dress material will be moro
worn than ever during the warm weather.
The neck of plain corsago is cut out very
low and round, if the wearer has a hand?
some neck, otb er wi RP. the high neck and
rucho will bo most becoming, and will not
look old-fashioned.
SLEEVES.
Sleeves of street dresses are easy fitting,
coat-shaped. They have bows at the elbow
and broad trimming at the wrist. Few now
dresses aro raado with epaulet?. A puff is
often placed half-way between tho arm-hole
and elbow. Silks for evening wear and thin
muslins have the Maria Theresa sleeve puffed
to tho Oibow and frilled. Long arms require
puffs around tho sleeves, and the tullo un
der-sloevos puffed, to fill out the frill. Short
arms look best to lengthwise puff?.
SK mts.
Trained skirts have a fiat gored front
width, two narrow side gores, aud two full
blaok breadths. The fnilness is laid in
pleats beneath the side seams. The buck
breadth a are. in French gathers. Five yards
ia the width of a moderate train to be worn
over small crinoline. Two yards is an ex?
treme length. Silks and poplins of light
quality are lined throughout with paper
muslin.
TIIIMMINGS.
A fringe, with gimp beading and detached
tassois, is very stylishly used on capes and
basques. Satin is preferred for trimming
silks, but modistes advise gros grain for
poplins and woolen goods. It is lighter for
summer, and does not fray like satin. It is
not *worth while to say on? is tired of
flounces. They -were never so much worn
as at present, and there aro literally ruffles
upon ruffles-chamber gauze and grenadino
snits being trimmed with bias flounces
edged with narrow, straight frills, giving a
peculiar light appearance. Pique ruffles are
made straight and pleated. Striped ruffles
look best cut bins.
CRINOLINE.
Tho new crinolino imported by the
modistes ?B merely a bustle with springs,
over which is full gores nt thc back, with
side pieces rounding to the belt. The front |
is entirely open. Six Swiss rnffles, very |
full nud wide, cross tho back widths from
the edge to tho belt. A fluted ruffle sur?
rounds tho whole affair. Eight dollars is
asked the walking length. Twenty dollars
for a trained skirt.
SHORT SUITS.
Short suits for tho streets aro worn by
ladies of all ages, tho stout as the slender.
A black silk casaque, with a short, flounced
skirt, is tho handsomest suit for a married
lady. Stout figures look best in the casaque,
or in a short basque, with a singlo skirt, on
which tho trimming simulates an upper]
skirt.
The standard length for walking dressess j
is to have them just escape the ground.
They measure between three and a half and
four yards in width. They aro still cut with
flat front, two side gores, and full back
breadth. Care should be tkken that there
is no fullness in front, to prevent the front
width hanging in a fold in tho centre.
