In England and other countries, where beary penalties are imponed, and an increasing vigilance practiced to detect and punish such frauds, by a system of inspection of I all malt liquors mannfaotured boforo exposed to salo, the practice is very common. How much moro in this country, where thcro arc no laws on the subject, and no officer to carefully analyze tho products of the brewery? Some years ago, Pro? fessor Mapee, of New York, analyzed tho beer from a dozen diff?rent breweries, and all were found adulterated with noxious substances. It ia said that tho sale of drugs to brewers, is a profit? able part of the trade. This is perfectly infamous. Cocculus indiens, (fish-berry,) mix v?mica, (dog button, from which s try ch i) mc ?H obtained,) are some of tho delectable substances found in beer! Theso aro potent poisons, and tho brewer found using them should bo drowned at mire in one of his own vats. The British Parliament passed a law to prevent this nefarious business. Tho fol? lowing is an extract: 'No druggist, vendor of or dealer in drugs, or chemist, or any other person, shall sell or deliver to any licensed brewer, doalor in or retailer of beer, knowing them to bc such, or shall sell or deliver to any person on account of. or in trust for, any such browor, dealer, or re? tailer, any liquor called by tho n.imo of or sold for coloring, from whatever material tho same may bo made; or any material or preparation other than unground brown malt, for tim darkening thc color of worts or beer, or any molasses, vitriol, boney, quassia, cocculus indiens, grains of para? dise, Guinea pepper, or opium, or any extract or preparation of molasses, or any ?u-t icio or prepa? ration to be used in worts or beer for or as a sub? stitute for malt or hops; and if any druggist shall offend in any of these particulars, such prepara? tion, Ac, shall bo forfeited, and may bo seized by any officer of excise, and tho person so offending shall forfeit five hundred pouiids.'
