TUE Commissioner of Agriculture, in his report
for tho year 1865. speaks as follows:
"There cnn bc no doubt of tho general adulte?
ration of all malt liquors, lu England and other
countries, where heavy penalties are imposed, and
an increasing vigilance practiced lo detect and
punish such frauds, by a system of1 inspection of
all malt liquors manufactured before exposed to
sale, the practice is very common. How much
more in this country, where there are no laws on
tho subject, and no officer to carefully analyze tho
products of the brewery? Somo years ago, Pro?
fessor Mapcs, of New York, analyzed the beer
ft om a dozen different breweries, and all wero
found adulterated with noxious substances. His
said that the salo of drugs to brewers, is a profit?
able part of tho trado. This is perfectly infamous.
Cocculus indicus, (fish-berry,) mix v?mica, (dog
button, from which strychnine is obtained, ) are
some of tho delectable substances found in beor!
These are potent poisons, and tho brewer found
using them should bo drowned at ouro in one of
his own vats. Thc British Parliament passed a
law to prevent this nefarious business. Tho fol?
lowing is an extract: 'No druggist, vendor of or
dealer in drugB, or chemist, or any other person,
shall sell or deliver to any licensed brewer, dealer
in or retailer of beor, knowing them to bo such,
or shall sell or deliver to any person on account
of. or ii/ trust for, any such brewer, dealer, or re?
tailer, any liquor called by tho name of or sold for
coloring,"from whatever "material tho samo may
be made; or any material or preparation other
than unground brown malt, for the darkening the
color ot worts or boer, or any molasses, vitriol,
honey, quassia, cocculus indicus, grains of para?
dise, Guinea pepper, or opium, or any extract or
preparation of molasses, or any articlo or prepa?
ration to bo used in worts or beor for or as a sub?
stituto for malt or hops; and if any druggist shall
ot?end in any of those particulars, such prepara?
tion, Ate., shall be forfeited, and may be seized by
any oflicer of excise, and the person so offending
shall forfeit fite hundred pounds.'
"Under this law, very many druggists and brow?
sers wore brought to grief, and yet th?; practice
continues. Unless the American public are ready
1 to admit tho immaculate purity and innocence ol
American brewers, they must be content, while
' drinking their beer, lo cherish the belief that the)
I are at the same time guzzling some narcotic poi
I son or damaging medicine. In view of the unpre?
cedented grow th of the barley crop; of the great
increase of tho number of maltsters and brewers
of the vast unknown quantities of boer that arc
