Two armies covered bill and plain,
Where Rap pahannock's waters
Ran deeply crimsoned with the stain
Of battle's recent slaughters, i ?
The summer clouds lay pitched like tents
In meads of Heavenly azure;
And each dread gun pf the elements
Slept in its hid embrasure.
The breeze so softly blew it made
No forest leaf to quiver,
And tho smoke of tue random cannonade
Bolled slowly from the river.
And now, where circling hills looked down,
With cannon grimly planted.
O'er listless oamp and silent town
The golden sun-set Slanted.
When on the fervid air there came
A strain-now rich, now tender;
The music seemed itself aflame
With day's departing splendor.
A Federal band, which, eve and morn,
Played measures brave and nimble,
Had just struck up. with flute and horn
And lively dash of cymbal.
Down flocked the Bokliers to the banks,
Till, margined by its pebbles.
One wooded shore was blue with "Yanks,"
And one was gray with "rebels."
Then all was still, and then the band,
With movement light and tricksy,
Made stream and forest, hill and strand,
Reverberate with "Dixie."
The conscious stream with burnished glow,
Wont proudly o'er its pebbles,
But thrilled throughout its deepest flow
With, yelling of the rebels.
Again a pause, and then again
The trumpets pealed sonorous,
And "Yankee Doodle" was the strain
To which the shore gave ohorrs.
The laughing ripple shoreward flew,
To kiss the shining pebbles;
IiOud shrieked the swarming boys in blue
Defiance to the rebels.
And yet once more the bugles sang
Above the stormy riot;
No shoat upon the evening rang
There reigned a holy quiet.
The sad, slow .stream, its noiseless flood
Poured o'er the glistening pebbles;
All silent now the Yankees stood,
And silent stood tho rob?is.
No unresponsive soul had heard
That plaintive note's appealing,
So deeply "Home, Sweet Home" had
stirred
The hidden founts of feeling.
Or blue or gray, the soldier sees,
As by the wand of fairy,
The cottage 'neath the live-oak trees,
The oabin by the prairie.
Or Gold or warm, his native skies
Bend in their beauty o'er him ;
Seen through the tear mist in his eyes,
His loved ones stand before him.
Vs fades the iris after rain
In April's tearful weather,
The vision vanished, as the strain
And day-light died together.
But memory, waked by music art;
Expressed in simplest numbers
Subdued the sternest Yankee's heart,
Made light the rebel's slumbers.
And fair the form of music shines,
That bright, celestial creature,
Who still 'mid war's embattled lines,
Gave this one touch of nature.

THE Commissioner of Agriculture, in his report
for tho year 1805, speaks as follows:
"There can bo no doubt of tho general adulte?
ration of ali malt liquors. In England and othei
?countries, whore heavy penalties aro imposed, and
?an increasing vigilance practiced to detect and
punish snob frauds, by a system of inspection ol
all malt liquors manufactured before exposed tc
s ale, the practice is very common. How much
more in this country, where there are no laws or
the subject, and no officer to carefully analyze thc
products of the brewery? Home years ago, Pro?
fessor Mapee, .of Now York, analyzed tho beet
from a dozon different breweries, and all were
found adulterated with noxious substances. It it
said that the salo of drugs to brewors, is a profit?
able part of the trado. This is perfectly infamous.

dealer in drugst or chemist, or any other person
( hall sell or deliver to auy licensed brewer, dcalei
in or retailer of beor, knowing them to bo such
or shall soil or deliver to any person on account
of, or in trust for, any such brewer, dealer, or re
tailer, any liquor called by thc name of or sold foi
coloring, from whatever material tho same maj
be made; or any material or preparation othei
than ungrouud brown malt, for tho darkening tin
color of worts or beer, or any molaeses, vitriol
honey, quassia, cocemos indlctiB, grains of para
diso? Gui?ea pepper, or1 opium, or any extract o
preparation of molasses, or any article or prepa
ration to he used in worts or beor for or as a sub
stituto for malt or hops; and if any druggist sha!
offend in' any of these particulars, such prepara
lion, Ac, shall ho forfeited, and may bc seized b,
any officer of excise, and tho person so offendinj
shall forfeit Ape hundred pounds.'
"Under this law, very many druggists and brew
ors were brought' to grief, and yet tho practic
continues. Unless thc American public are road
to admit tho immaculate purity and innocence <
American brewers, they mnst be content, whil
drinking their beer, to cherish the bolief that the
are at the Barn? time guzzling some narcotic poi
eon or damaging medicine. In view of tho unpn
cOdentcd growth of the barley crop; of the groa
increase of tho number of maltsters and brewon
of tho vast unknown quantities of boer that at
drunk in every city and almost every town on th
