ordered to report a resolution postponing
the Texas election till further Congressional
action. The Ranking Committee ?greed to
report the Senate bill for equalization of the
currency among the States, with amend?
ments; not, however, affecting tho maiu ob?
ject of the bill.
The Senate has confirmed the appoint?
ment of Wilder as Postmaster at Columbia.
This is believed to be the first colored mau
confirmed by the Senate.
In the House, a bill providing for taking
the census passed. It includes divers sta?
tistics. ' The Election Committee reported
McCranie and St. Martin, holding War
mouth's certificates from Louisiana, ineligi?

In the Senate, the Judiciary Committee
reported, without amendment, ?bill paying
the Southern officers incapable of taking

sion of the fortieth Congress, was tabled.

Congress is very sluggish: every motion to

THE Commisslonerof Agriculture, in his report
for tho year 18U5, speaks as follows:
"There can bo no doubt of tho general adulte?
ration of all malt liquors. In England and other
countries, where heavy penalties are imposed, and
an increasing vigilance practiced to detect and
punish such frauds, by a system of inspection ol
all malt liquors manufactured before exposed tc
sale, the practice is very common. How much
more in this country, whore thero aro no laws on
the subject, and no officer to carefully analyze thc
products of tho brewery? Some years ago, Pro?
fessor Mapes. of New* York, analyzed thc beet
from a dozen different breweries, and all were
found adulterated with noxious substances. It ic
said that the sale, of drugs to brewers, in a profit?
able part of the trade. Thia is perfectly inf amons.
Cocculus indicas, (fish-berry,) nux v?mica, (dog
button, from which strychnine is obtained,) arc
anmo of tho delectable substances found in beer!
These ..rn potent poisons, and tho browor found
using them should bo drowned at onco in one o:
his own vats. Tho British Parliament passed r
law to prevent this nefarious business. The fol
lowing is an extract: 'No druggist, vendor of oi

of, or in trust for, any sncb brewer, dealer, or re

stitute for malt orhops; and if any druggist ehal
offend in any of theso particulars, such prepara
tion, Ac., shall bo forfeited, and may be seized b;
any officor of excise, and tho person so offondinj
shall forfeit Jive hundred pounds.'
"Under this law, very many druggists and brew
ere wero brought to grief, and yet the praotic

drunk in every city and almost every town on th
continent; it is the dictate of sound wisdom, the
