Governor Bullock, of Georgia, has offered
$5,000 reward for the apprehension of tho
parties who lynched July Martin, a negro,
at Spring Place, Ga. Martin had been
placed in jail for attempting to commit a
rapb npon the person of a lady of that place,
wno has been an invalid for more than a
year, and to whom ho formerly belonged.
At the Close of yesterday's labors thero
remained between the rapidly approaching
ends of the Pacific Railroad a gap of only
eighty-two miles. The prophesy that the
Fourth of July, 1869, would see San Fran?
cisco and New York united by rail, is thu3
seen to be sure of an easy realisation.
The Stockbridge Indians in Winconsin
are rapidly disappearing. This tribe once
numbered 10,000 warriors. They immi?
grated from Massachusetts to New York in
1789, to Ohio in 1809, and to Wisconsin in
1821. They are now suffering for food, and
number but 300 men, women and children.
A small boat, containing twelve boxes of
nitro-glycerine, was discovered under a
wharf at the foot of Whitehall street, New
York, recently-enough, it is said, to blew
the lower portion of that city and Brooklyn
to atoms.

THE Commissioner of Agriculture, in his report
for tho year 1865, speaks as follows:
"Thero cun be no doubt of the general adulte?
ration of all malt liquors. In England and other
countries, where heavy penalties aro imposed, and
an increasing vigilance practiced to detect and
punish such frauds, by a system of inspection of
all malt liquors manufactured bofore exposed to
sale, the practice is very common. How much
more in this country, where thero are no laws on
the Bubject, and rn officer to carefully analyze the
products of the brewery? Some years ago, Pro?
fessor Mapee, of New York, analyzed the beer
from a dozen different brewories, and all were
found adulterated with noxious substances. It is
said that the sale of drugs to brewers, is a profit?
able part of the trade. This is perfectly infamous.
Cocculus indiens, (fish-berry,) nux v?mica, (dog
button, from which strychnine is obtained,) are
some of the delectable substances found in beer!
These, are potent poisons, and tho brewer found
using them should bo drowned at once in one of
his own vats. Tho British Parliament passed a
law to prevent this nefarious business. The fol?
lowing is an extract: 'No druggist, vendor of or
dealer in drugs, or chomist, or any other person,
shall sell or deliver to auy licensed brewer, dealer
in or retailer of beer, knowing them to be such,
or shall sell or deliver to any person on account
of, or lu trust for, any such brewer, dealer, or re?
tailer, any liquor called by the name of or sold for
coloring, from whatever material tho same may
be made; or any material or preparation other
than unground brown malt, for the darkening the
color of wort? or beer, or any molasses, vitriol,
honey, quassia, cocculus indicas, grains of para?
dise, Guinea pepper, or opium, or any extract or
preparation of molasses, or any article or prepa?
ration to bo used in worta or beer for or as a sub?
stitute for malt or hops; and if any druggiat shall
offend in any of these particulars, such prepara?
tion, .vc, shall be forfeited, and may be seized by
any officer of exciao, and the person so offending
shall forfeit fl cv hundred pounds?
"Uudor this law, very many druggists and brew?
ers were brought to grief, and yet the practioe
continncs. Uiiloss the American public aro ready
to admit tho immaculate purity and innocence of
American brewers, they must bo content, while
drinking their beer, to cherish thc belief that they
aro at tho samo timo guzzling somo narcotic poi?
son or damaging medicino. In view of the unpre?
cedented growth of the barley crop; of tho great
increase of the number of maltsters and brewers ;
of tho vast unkuown quantities of beer that aro
drunk in every city and almost every town on the
continent; it is the dictate of sound wisdom, that
tho attention of legislators should bo called to
the subject of tho adulteration of onr malt liquors,
and Bcvere penalties should be inflicted as a pre?
ventive."
