RAPE.-Cases of rape are of almost daily
occurrence. The Macon (Cn.) Journal re?
cords the case of a negro in Dooly County,
in that State, who caught two little white
girls, aged eight and twelve years, attempted
to rape them, and because ono of them
screamed, cut her throat. Tho other he
tied, and made several attempts on her.
Late in the day, Bhe succeeded in freeing
herself and tottered to a neighboring houso,
where she told her story. The negro was
arrested, imprisoned, nud finally confessed
his crime-saying "the devil got into him."
lt is reported that tho negro was afterwards
taken from the jailor and burnt to death.
The Hillsboro (N. C.) Recorder records two
rapes in that section, committed by negroes
upon white girls, each onlv fourteen years
old.

A spring wagon has been invented by a gen?
tleman in Mayslick, Ky., which he proposes
to run without any kind of animal or steam
power. He hns already perfected a small
model, which runs up or down hill very ra?
pidly. The power is received from an im?
mense coiled steel spring, which will run
for half an hour without being wound np.
In going up hill the spring exhausts itself,
but in going down hill it winds itself up.
Tho inventor claims that ho can carry very
heavy loads over any ordinury road.

A well-meaning but dolorous clergyman,
who disfigured his countenance and woro a
face of perpetual mourning, once visited
the sick room of a worldly friend. As his
sad visage appeared in tho door-way, the
sick man started up and exclaimed: "Why,
what's the matter? You look as if yoiir
religion didn't agree icitli you!"1
A half-witted boy has confessed to having
murdered Hon. Murray McConnell, of Indi?
ana. Tho boy says ho had a dispute with
Mr. McConnell about eleven dollars, and
becoming enraged, struck him on tho head
with a hammer. The boy is left-handed,
and it is asserted that the blows which
proved fatal must havo been struck by a
left-handed person.
An Irishman recently soliloquized : ' 'What
a waste o' money to buy mate when you
know the hali of it is bone, while you can
spind it for rum that hasn't a bone in it."
