Some years ago, Pro? fessor Mapee, of New York, analyzed tho beer from a dozen different breweries, aud all wore found adulterated with noxious substances. It is said that tho salo of drugs to brewers, is a profit? able part of tho trade. This is perfectly infamous. Gocculus indicas, (fish-berry,) nax v?mica, (dog button, from which strychnine is obtained,) aro some of tho delectable substances found in beer! These aro potent poisons, and tho brewer found using them should be drowned at onto in one of I his own vat*. Tho British Parliament passed a I law to prevent this nefarious business. The fol I lowing is an extract: 'No druggist, vendor of or dealer in drugs, or chemist, or any other person, . shall sell or ueliVf r to any licensed brewer, dealer I in or retailer of boer, knowing them to bo auch, j or shall sell or deliver to any person on account I of, orin trust for, any such brewer, dealer, or re tailer, any liquor called by thc name of or so I ''or i coloring, from whatever material tho same may : be made: or any material or preparation other ; than un ground brown malt, for the darkening tho color of worts or beer, or any molasses, vitriol, honey, quassia, cocculus indiens, grains of para? dise, Guinea pepper, or opium, or any extract or ! preparation of moblasen, or any article or prepa? ration to ho used in worts or beer for or as a sub? stitute for malt or hops; and if any druggist shall offeud in any of theso particulars, such prepara? tion, Ac, shall bo forfeited, aud may bo seized by any officer of excise, and tho person so offending shall forfeit fine hundred pounds.' "Under thia law, very many druggists and brew? ers were brought to grief, and yet thc practico continuos. Unless tho American public are ready to admit the immaculate purity and innocence of American brewers, they must be content, while drinking their beer, tn cherish the belief that they aro at tho samo time guzzling some narcotic poi? son or damaging medicino. In view of tho unpre? cedented growtli of tho barley crop; of tho groat increase of the number of maltsters and brewers; of tho vast unknown quantities of beer that aro drunk in every city and almost every town on tho continent; it i? the dictate of sound wisdom, that tho attention of legislators should bo called to the subject of the adulteration of our malt liquors, and severe penalties should be inflicted as a pre? ventive.
