In the Senate, McDonald introduced a
bill to aid in constructing the railroad from
the junction of the Mississippi and Missouri
Rivers to the Mexican border. A Commit?
tee of Seven was appointed on political dis?
abilities, with Robertson as chairman. Ad?
journed.
The appointment of Robertson as chair?
man of the Committee on the Removal of
Political Disabilities, indicates n stringent
examination of all cases, and favorable to
only a few. Robertson recently remarked,
regarding reports in South Carolina papers,
that he was tending towards Democrat, that
in that ho and his colleague wero fully ns
radical as ever.

Some new scenes have recontly been add?

One of these scenes is the examination of
the conscripts. Ono of them is asked by
the examining physician: "Are yon able
bodied?" "No," says the conscript, "I am
not." "What is your complaint?" "Tho
same as that of our country-I have a bad
constitution."
Since the great draft riot iu Now York,
the negro population of that city has fallen
off about three thousand. At the present
time it numbers between 13,000 and 14,000,
all told. Among the better class aro a few
doctors, (at least they call themselves doc?
tors,) two or three editors, about a dozen
preachers, aud a couple of lawyers, so
called.
There is a mania for committing suicide
prevailing at present. OL Tuesday, a mau
named Albert Rolla committed suicide in
Baltimore. On Wednesday, a German,
named Norman Schafer, killed himself, in
Rochester; and on Thursday, Albert Shock?
ley put an end to himself, in Boston.
A plot is reported as haviug been disco?
vered in Memphis, among tho negroes, for
tho purpose of destroying the town of Hele?
na, Tenn., and thoy had confessed to hav?

man.

THE Commissioner of Agriculture, in his report
for tho year 1H(>5, speaks as follows:
"There can bo no doubt of the general adulte?
ration of all malt liquors. In England and other
countries, where heavy penalties are imposed, and
an increasing vigilance practiced to detect and
punish such frauds, by a system of inspection of
all malt liquors manufactured before exposed to
sale, thc practico ia very common. How much
more in this country, where there arc no laws on
the subject, and no officer to carefully analyze tho
products of the brewery? Somo years ago, Pro?
fessor Mapes, of New York, analyzed tho beer
from a dozen different breweries," and all were
found adulterated with noxious substances. It is
said that tho salo of drug? to brewers, is a prolit
ablo part of tho trade. This is perfectly infamous.
Cocculus indicus, (fish-berry,) mix v?mica, (dog
button, from winch strychnine is obtained,) are
some of thc delectable substances found in beer!
These arc potent poisons, and thc brewer found
usiug them shoHld be drowned at once in one of
his own vats. The British Parliament passed a
law to provent this nefarious business. The fol?
lowing is an extract: 'No druggist, vendor of or
dealer in drugs, or chemist, or any other person, j
shall sell or deliver to any licensed brewer, dealer
In or retailer of beor, knowing them te bo such,
or shall sell or deliver to any person on account :
of, orin trust for, any such Grower, dealer, or re- 1
tailer, any liquor called by the name of or sold for '
coloring, from whatever material tho same may
bc made; or any material or preparation other
than unground brown malt, for tho darkening the 1
color of worts or boor, or any molasses, vitriol,
honey, quassia, cocculus indiens, grains of paru- :
disc, Quinen popper, or opium, or any extract <>r
preparation of molasses, or any article or prepa?
ration to bc need in worts or beer for o' ? a sub?
stitute for malt oi hops; and if any dr? ist shall
offend in any of these particulars, snell prepara- |

"Under this law, very many druggists and brew?
ers were brought to grief, and yet tin- practice
continues. Unless thu American public arc roady
to admit the immaculate purity and innocence of
American browors, they must" be content, while
drinking their beer, to cherish the belief that they
are at thc samo time guzzling some narcotic poi?
son or damaging medicino. In view of the unpre?
cedented growth of the barley crop; of tho great
increase of the number of maltsters and brewers;
of the vast unknown quantities of beor that aro
drunk in every city and almost every town on the
continent; it is the dictate of sound wisdom, that
the attention of legislators should bo called to
the subject of the adulteration . ' aalt liquors,
