arrived, from Havana. She brings Senor
Roberts, Spanish Minister to Washington;
also one company of the iifth United States
artillery from Key West.
AUGUSTA, March 12.-Charles Wallace,
editor of the Warrcntou Clipper, was shot
and instantly killed this moruiug. It is
stated that Wallace applied for admission
into a Masonic lodge, at Warrenton, and
was black-balled by Dr. G. W. Darden, who
had promised not to oppose his application.
Wallace then attacked Darden through tho
columns of his paper, denouncing him os a
liar and a villain. As Wallace was passing
Darde n's office, he shot him from his win?
dow with a rifle, the ball passing through
Wallace's head and causing instant death.
The affair creates intenso excitement in
Warrenton. Wallace was a Democrat, and
Darden is a Republican.

being duly sworn, declare that they are citi?
zens of Cokesbury, in said Couuty, that
they are members of tho Democratic club;
that no meeting of said club has ever been
held at which a number of them were not
present; that no such remarks as are im?
puted to the club by W. K. Tolbert, in bis
extraordinary testimony, about cutting up
the body of B. F. Randolph and feeding it
to the hogs, or boxing it up and sendiug it
as a present to Governor Scott, were ever
made before the club; that no such organi?
zation as tho Ku Klux Klan was ever
formed or ever existed in their community,
nor do they believe such an organization
ever existed in any part of the country; that
tho Demorcatic club was a legitimate and
proper political organization to further the
interests of the Democratic party by all
legal and proper means, and that said club
transacted its business in accordance with
law and usage, as the minutes of its pro?
ceedings will at any time show; and further,
that neither W. K. Tolbert nor his asso?

AN IMPORTANT ENTERPRISE.-The mag?
nificent success of tho Augusta and Gran
itevilio factories bas impelled a number of
gentlemen in South Carolina and Georgia
to cochino somewhat of their surplus funds
for tho purpose of establishing a now cotton
mill. It is proposed to raise, by subscrip?
tion, a capital stock of $500,000. and locate
tho factory at Vaucluse, South Carolina.
Of the sum proposed, tho amount of $250,
000 has already been conditionally sub?
scribed at the North, and there remains but
an equal amount to bo raised Southward,
in order to make tho enterprise a sucoess.
We are glad to know that a very handsome
proportion of this has already been pledged,
and now that tho subscription books aro
opened at the oOice of Messrs. John J. Co?
hen St Son, wo anticipate constant acces?
sions, so that the matter will be promptly
launched. Though the capital stock is to
be $500,000, sixty per cent, only will be
called for when all is subscribed, and the
remaining forty percent, in four instalments
within twelve months. Out of thia capital
it is proposed to expend $1(10,000 in tho
orection of a mill of 15,000 spindles. The
Augusta mill has, we believe, 18,000 spin?
dles, and the Orangeville mill 22,000. We
refer to this to show that, though not so
capacious as either of these splendid facto?
ries, tho projected mill at Vaucluse will,
nevertheless, be one of considerable magni?

forests of Maine advertises as follows: "My
now and highly polishe 1 Excelsior press has
printed, in the last three mouths, baud-bills
of all colors, sufficient, if pasted together,
to form a paper ribbon sevcu inches wide,
and of a length to encircle tho whole globe.
The whole amount of paper used in my of?
fice, on various presses, since it was star'ed,
would be sufficient to completely cover the
earth in au envelope of paper-macho three
eighths of an inch in thickness. My Ex?
celsior press will run off more bills in five
minutes than any other four presses in tbe
State will in au hour. There are but two
presses of this kind in the world-ono is in
my office, and the other I have stowed
away in my cellar. Tho inventor is dead,
so that no new ones can be built."
