powder house on Lewis Levy's lot, within

in Section 18 of an ordinance to raise sup?
plies for the year 1869, taxing tho gross re?
ceipts of newspapers, bo stricken out, and
bo so amended as toread, "Fifty cents ou
every $100 of tho gross receipts of all print?
ing offices in thia city, over and abovo $1,000
per nunum." The report of tho Committee
of Ways aud Means was received and adopt?
ed, aud on motion, it was considered to have
had its first readiug and was ordored to its
second readiug, at next regular meeting of
Council.

AN ORDINANCE TO REOULATE RAILROAD CROSS?
INGS.
Be il ordained by (lie Mayor and Aldermen
in Council assembled, and by authority of the
same, That tho respective railroad compa?
nies, whoso tracks cross tho streets of the
city of Columbia, bo required to plauk, at
such respective crossiugs, for tho breadth of
the street, between and on the side of their
rails, so ns to make the same convenient for
passage, and also, to keep such planking in
repair.
Be it further ordaineil, That tho said rail?
road companies bo required to bridge the
drains at all such crossings, the eutire
breadth of tho street and to keep the same
in repair, where such drains or ditches exist
or may hereafter exist. Also, that the. said
railroad companies be required to koep up
all embankments or raisings of tho streets,
which now exist, or may hereafter bo re?
quired at such crossings by tho said Mayoi
aud Aldermen, aud to open all other street;
now closed, when tho City Council of Co
lumbla shall deem it to the interest of tin
city so to decide.
Be it further ordained, That the said rail
' road companies bo notified of tho require
ments of lins ordiuanco, und that on non
I compliance, within ten days after sud
j notification, the Mayor do impose a fiuo o:
i ten dollars for every day the said companie
