A resolution declaring the seat vacant, and as Bowen, Hunt and Menard came up as con? testants, they wore allowed fifteen minutes to speak. The suggestion was made that Menard should speak from the Clerk's desk; objection being made, Menard said he appeared more to acknowledge this privilege than to make an argument; but he would be reoreaut to 9,000 of his race, whose votes sent him here, did he not vin? dicate their rights. He claims no special privileges on account of his color. Hunt declined to speak. The case is progressing. In the Senate, a resolution directing the President to transmit immediately copies of the constitutional amendment to the State Legislatures was considered. The bill strengthening the public currency was re? ported. In the House, Boutwell reported a bill removing the disabilities of July, 18G8, whieh was passed. The Louisiana election case was resumed in the afternoon, the contestants Menard aud Hunt, being pre? sent. A squabble ensued, during which Colfax had occasion to say to Chanler, of New York, "The remark? of the gentleman from New York are not respectful to the Chair, nor aro they true." Chanler re? plied, "Well, sir, wo will leave that ques? tion to be decided by the record." Upson, from the Election Committee, proceeded to argue that neither Hunt nor Menard were entitled to a seat. Grant visited the House to-day, aud sent for Boutwell, with wdiom ho had a long conversation regarding Georgia, Virginia, Mississippi and Texas, and also conversed with Bingham. Tho President of the Union Pacific Rail? road telegraphs that tho road has been blockaded since the 12th, but will bo opened in a week. Gen. Grant, in conversation yesterday with Senator Pool, of North Carolina, ex? pressed himself as particularly anxious for substantial reconstruction in tho South. North Carolina and Alabama, he said, were among the best reconstructed States of all, and when the rest were as safely and plea? santly back in the Union, he thought, ours would be the happiest country on tho globe. When tho pure medicinal restorative, now so widely known as Wolfe's SCHIEDAM SCHNAPPS, was introduced into tho worid, uudor tho endorse? ment of 4,000 leading members of tho medical pro? fession, somo twenty years ago, its proprietor was well aware that it could not wholly escapo tho ponalty attached to now and useful preparations. He, therefore, endeavored to invest it with tho strongest possiblo safeguard against counterfeit? ers, and to render all attempts to pirate it difficult and dangerous, lt was submitted to distinguish? ed chemists for analysis, and pronounced by them tho pxtrest spirit ever manufactured. Its purity and properties having boen thus ascertained, samples of the article were forwarded to 10,000 physcians, including all tho leading practitioners tu tho United States, for purposes of experiment. A circular, requesting a trial of tho preparation and a report of tho result, accompanied each specimen. 4,000 of the most eminent medical men in tho Union promptly responded. Their opinions of tho articlo wer . ?nanimously favorable. Such a preparation, they said, had long been wanted by tho profession, aa no relianco could he placed oil the ordinary liquors of commerce; all of which were more or loss adulterated, and, therefore, unfit for medical purposes. The peculiar excel? lence and strength of the oil of juniper, which formed one of tho principal ingredients of tho ! Schnapps, together with an unalloyed character : of the alcoholic element, give it, in the estimation i of the faculty, a marked superiority over every (?ther diffusive stimulant as a diuretic, tonic and restorative. Tin-so satisfactory credentials from professional men of tho highest rank wore published in a condensed form, mid enclosed with each bottle ot tho Schnapps, as one of the guarantees of its ? genuineness. Other precautions against fraud were also adopted; a patent wa? obtained for the ? article, tho label was copyrighted, a. fae simile of i tho proprietor's autograph signature was attached j to each label and cover, his name and that of the preparation were embossed on thc bottles, and thc corks wcro sealed with his private seal. No articlo : had over been sold in HI?B country under the name I of Schnapps prior to tho introduction of Wolfe's j Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps, in 1851; and thc label was deposited, as his trade mark, in tho Unitod States District Court for tho Southern Dis? trict of New York during that year. It mignt oe supposed, uv persons unacquainted with the daring character of the pirates who prey upon tho reputation of honorable merchants, hy vending deleterious trash uudor their nanto, that tho protections so carefully thrown around those Schnapps would have precluded tho introductions and salo of counterfeits. They seem, however, only to have stimulated thc rapacity of impostors. The trade mark of tho proprietor has been stolon: tho endorsement which his Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps alono received from tho medical pro? fession has hoon claimed hy mendacious humbugs; his labels an bottles have been imitated, his ad? vertisements paraphrased, his circulars copied, and, worso than all, dishonorable retailors, after disposing of tho genuine contents of bis bott les, have tilled them np with common gin, thc most deleterious of all liquors, and thus made his name anil brand a cover for poison. Tho public, tho modical profession and the sick, for whom tho Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps is prescribed as aromedy, aro equally interested with tho proprietor in the detection and suppression ol these nefarious practices. Tho genuino articlo, manufactured at tho establishment of the under? signed, in Schiedam, Holland, is distilled from a harley of tho finest quality, and flavored with an essential extract of the berry of thc Italian juniper, of uncquallod purity. By a process un? known in tho preparation of any other liquor, it is freed from evory acrimonious a::d corrosivo ele? ment. Complaints have hoon received from thc loading physicians and families in tho Southern States, of thc salo of cheap imitations of tho Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps in those markets; and travel? ers, who aro in too habit of using it ns an antidoto to tho baneful inllucnco of unwholesome river water, testify that choap gin, put up in Schiedam bottles, is frequently palmed off upon tho unwary. Tho agents of the undersigned havo been requested to instituto inquiries on tho subject, and to for? ward to him tho names of such parties as they may ascertain to ho engaged in the atrocious system of deception. In conclusion, tho under? signed would say that ho bau produced, from tinder tho hands of tho most distinguished men of scionco in Amorica, proofs unanswerable of tho purity and medicinal cxcellenco of tho Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps; that ho has expended many thousand dollars in surrounding it with guarantees and safeguards, which ho designed should protect the public and himself against fraudulent imita? tions; that ho has shown it to ho tho only liquor in tho world that can bo uniformly depended upon as uuadulttiratcd; that he has challonged investi? gation, analysis, comparison, and experiment in I all its forms: and from every ordeal tho prepa? ration which hoars his name, soal and trado mark, has como off triumphant. Ho, then-lore, feols it a duty ho owes to his fellow-citizens gonerally, to tho medical profession and tho sick, to denounce and oxposo tho Charlatans who counterfeit those cvidencos of idtntity, and hu calis upon 'he press and the public to aid him in his efforts to rouicdy so groat an evil.
