gives the opinion of Senators Hill and Mil?
ler on Georgia affairs:
Senators Hill and Miller are both in tho
city, looking as though they would very
much prefer seats in the Senato Chamber at
Washington. Tho latter thinks it probable
Georgia will bo remanded to a provisional
status, and that a fifteenth constitutional
amendment, declaring the negroes eligible
to office in every State, will bo presented to
the country. Tho former is somewhat reti?
cent, and, I think, he knows moro than ho
believes prudent to tell. With tho oppor?
tunities he possessed at Washington, of
gaining information, (and Mr. Hill is not a
man to lose an opportunity,) ho must know
pretty well what Congress intends to do.
He does not advise the Legislature to go
back directly on its action relative to negro
ineligibility. He believes, however, that it
should act, and that speedily-that it
should, at once, adopt a resolution declar?
ing its willingness to recognize all civil and
political rights guaranteed, under the Con?
stitution, to persons, regardless of o.olor, as
determined by a decision of the Supreme
Court of Georgia. This course, he thinks,
will, in a great measure, disarm our enemies
in Congress. He did not say it would meet
the approbation of General Grant, but I
drew that inference from the tenor of his
remarks. When asked his opinions as to
the propriety of sending commissioners to
Washington, he promptly replied, "that
can do no possible good."

The tunnel under the Chicago River just
completed at Chicago, has sprung a leak,
and the passengers, it is stated, aro subject
to a drizzling shower bath of dirty water.
Two cracks have opened in tho roof of tho
tunnel, but it is believed that no permanent
injury has boen done.
