Tho bill was then ordered to bo engrossed. Several Senate amendments to the (Jonsidar appropriation bill were rejected. At the fire in Hanlon A; Newman's distil? lery, New York, at the corner of Twentieth street and avenue A, on Monday morning, a young man named Joseph Pratt, who was employed iu tho distillery, was barned to death. The body was found to-day among the ruins ou tho top floor. Rufus Clioate onco said: "1 don't like alibis; they often break down. I prefer somnambulism. LENGE.-At tho instance of T. B. Garrett, colored, William II. Francis, colored, has been indicted, in Charleston, for sending him a challenge to fight a duel on the 28th of September last. The challenge grew out of politics. i Solomon II. Sharp, of the town of Root. N. Y., murdered his father-in-law, John Pul? ver, aged seventy-three, last week, by break? ing his skull with a maul. Sharp had come home late at night with n companion, both drunk. Sharp dragged his wife out of bed and compelled her to wait on them. Pulver objected to this treatment of his daughter, when Sharp seized thc maul and boat the old man's brains out. THE HOURORS op ST. He, thoreforo, endeavored to invest it with tho strongest possiblo safeguard against counterfeit? ers, and to render all attempts to pirate it difficult and dangerous, lt was submitted to distinguish? ed chemists for analysis, and pronounced by them tho purest spirit ever manufactured. Its purity and properties having been thus ascertained, samples of tho articlo wore forwarded to 10,000 phjseians, including all tho leading practitioners iu thu United Htates, for purposes of experiment. A circular, requesting a trial of tho preparation and a report of tho result, accompanied each specimen. 4,000 of tho most eminent medical men in thu Union promptly responded. Thoir opinions of tho articlo were unanimously favorable Such a preparation, thoy said, had long been wanted by tho profession, as no reliance could ho placed on tho ordinary liquors of commerce; all of which wore moro or loss adultoratod, and, therefore, unlit for medical purposos. Tho peculiar excel? lence and strongth of tho oil of juniper, which formed ono of tho principal ingredients of the Sohn apps, together with an unalloyed character of the alcoholic olomont, give, it, in tho estimation of tho faculty, a marked superiority over every other diffusive, stimulant as a diuretic, tonic and restorative. These satisfactory credentials from professional mon of tho highest rank woro published in a condensed form, and cncloeed with each hottlo ot tho Schnapps, as ono of the guarantees of its genuineness. Other precautions against fraud woro also adopted; a patent was obtained for the articlo, tho label was copyrigbbid, a/ac simile of tho proprietor's autograph signaturo was attached to each labol and cover, his namo and that of tho preparation were embossed on tho bottles, and the corks woro sealed with his private seal. No articlo had evor hoon sold in this country under the namo of Schnapps prior to tho introduction of Wolfo's Schiedam Aromatio Schnapps, in 1K51; and tho label wa* deposited, aa bia trade mark. Dy persona unacquainted with tho daring character of the pirates who prey upon the reputation of honorable merchants, by vending deleterious trash under thoir name, that the protections so carefully thrown around these Schnapps would have precluded the introductions and Bale of counterfeits. They seem, however, only to have stimulated the rapacity of impostora. The trade mark of the proprietor has been stolon: tho endorsement which bis Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps alono received from the medical pro? fession has be?n claimed by mondacious humbugs; his labels an bottles have been imitated, his ad? vertisements paraphrased, his circulars copied, aud, worse than all, dishonorable rotailers. after disposing of the genuine contents of bis bottles, have lillod them up with common gin, the most deleterious of all liquors, and thu? made Iiis name and brand a cover for poison. The public, the medical profession and tho si. a, for whom tho Kchiedam Aromatic Schnapps is prescribed as a remedy, are equally interested with the proprietor iu the detection aud suppression ot these nefarious practices. Tho genuino article, manufactured at the establishment of the under? signed, in Schiedam, Holland, ia distilled from a barley of tho finest quality, and flavored with an essential extract of tho berry of thc Italian juniper, of unequalled purity. By a process un? known in tho preparation of any other liquor, it is freed from every acrimonious and corrosive ele? ment. Complaints have been received from the leading physicians and families in the Southern States, of tho sale of choap imitations of the Schiedam Aromatic .Schnapps in those markets; and travel? ers, who are in tho habit of using it as au antidoto to the baneful influence of unwholesome river water, testify that cheap gin, put up in Schiedam buttles, is frequently palmed off upon th? unwary. In conclusion, tho under? signed would say that he has produced, from under tho hands of the most distinguished men of Bcienco in America, proofs unanswerable of tho purity and medicinal excollenco of the Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps; that he has expended many thousand dollars in surrounding it with guarantees and safeguards, which bo designed should protect the public and himself against fraudulent imita? tions; that he has shown it to bo the only liquor in thc world that can tin uniformly depended upon a-< unadalturated; that ho has challenged investi? gation, analysis, comparison, and experiment in all its forms: and from every ordeal the prepa? ration which bears his name, seal and trado mark, has como off triumphant.
