THE MATERIAL PROGRESS OF THE SOUTH
CHEHBTNQ SIGNS.-Perhaps the best evi?
dence of tho sure and rapid material pro?
gress of the South may be found in the fact,
that the price of the bonds of the different
Southern States is steadily rising in Wall
street. The directors of onr Now York
savings banks, who are proverbially conser?
vative, cautious and sagacious, bavo lately
bought largely these State bonds. Tho
Southern p* opie themselves aro also adding
considerably to their investments in these
bonds. Other cheering signs of the onergy
with which the recuperative powers of tho
South are awakening, may bo found in the
great cotton crop, estimated at ?200,000,000;
in the plentiful rico and sugar crops; in tho
abundant production of everything con?
sumed by the Southern peoplo at home; in
the report that in many parts of the South
labor has become even oheaper than it used
to be in the days of slavery; and, lastly, in
many indications that tho political pacifica?
tion which must infallibly follow the inau?
guration of General Grant, will open at the
South an era of good feeling and of unpre?
cedented prosperity.

DEAD LETTERS.-The Postmaster General,
in his recent report, states that the whole |
number of dead letters of all classes re?
ceived by the United States Post Office,
during the year ending June 30, 186S, was
4.162,144. Of these letters, 3,995,066 were |
domestic letters. The domestic letters re?
ceived are classed as follows: Ordinary.dead
letters. 3,028,461; drop and hotel letters.
522,677; unmailable, 363,898; fictitious ad
.dr eases, 9,190; registered letters, 8,282; re?
turned from foreign countries, 66,558. Of
the ordinary dead letters forwarded from
the office at Washington, about 84 per cent,
were delivered, and of tho valuable dead
letters about 89 per cent, were delivered,
