The Committee on Fire Department pre? sented the following report: The Committee on Fire Department, to whom was referred tho"petitiou of the Vigi? lant Firo Engine Company, would respect? fully report, that they have had the same under careful consideration, and however much they desire to see the company thoroughly organized and equipped, yet they cannot recommend any appropri? ation from tho city treasury, as the funds are at present too low. If, however, the company can show to the Council that thoy have a suitable house for keeping the eugine and the necessary hose to muko it effective, your committee would recommend that the city ongine be turned over to them. Council proceeded to the consideration of I the proposals submitted for blacksmith and j wheelwright work for thu Street Depart? ment. On motion, the various proposals were referred to a Special Commit tee, consisting of; Aldermen Walter, Johnson and Shields, for examination, with inst ructions to report ut next meeting of Council. Council next proceeded to consider the proposals for renting the Fair Grounds for the ensuing year to tho highest bidder, which proved to be John S. McIntosh. After a hoariug of the evidence connected with the above claim, on motion, it was or? dered to be laid on the table. A bill entitled "An Ordinance to raise supplies for the year 1869," received its third reading, amended, passed, its title changed to an ordinance, was duly ratified and became a law. A bill entitled "An Ordinance to alter and amend an Ordinance, regulating the weighing of cotton in tho city of Colum? bia," received its second reading, and by uuauimous consent, received its third read? ing, passed, its title changed to an Ordi? nance, was duly ratified and became a law, as follows: AN ORDINANCE TO ALTER AND AMEND AN ORDI? NANCE REGULATING THE WEIGHING OF COT? TON IN THE CITY OF COLUMBIA. Be it Ordained by the Mayor atid Aldermen of the City of Columbia, and by the authority of the same, That from and after the passage of this Ordinance, it shall not be lawful for purchasers of cotton, or any other person or persons, other than the duly elected weighers of this city, to weigh any cotton purchased or sold in this city. Any person or persons violating this Or? dinance shall, upon conviction thereof beforo tho Mayor, be fined not less than twenty dollars for every bale of cotton so weighed, in violation of this Ordinance. Tho following bills were presented, re? ceived their first reading, and were ordored to their second reading at next regular meet? ing of Council: A bill entitled, "An Ordinance to regu? late railroad crossings." A bill enlitled, "An Ordinance concern? ing cross si^ns and wcoden awnings on Richardson street." A bill entitled, "An Ordinance concerning tho Columbia and Augusta Railroad Com? pany."
