CHLOROFORM AT AV EXECUTION.-A con?
vict who was executed at Utrea, Now York,
on Tuesday last for the murder of ii little
girl, was helped easily into eternity by the
administration of chloroform before tho
drop fell. If we understand,this properly,
it was permitted by the State authorities
that the law should bo mitigated ir- such a
degree that tho murderer should bo hurried
beforo bis Maker while he was in ii state of
insensibility. If ho had shown any morey
to the child Whom he murdered, there
might bo some excuse for this leniency.
The intention in tho carrying out of the
law in the execution of a murderer is two?
fold. First. The sentence is, that, whatever
pain is tho necessary consequence of the
exeoution shall be endured by him. Second.
The example to others is of the utmost im?
portance. Now, what cnn bc tho moral
effect of such a perversion of tho law ns
this? Suppose that instead of being insen?
sible with chloroform at tho timo of the
execution the man had been made so by the
use of liquor, lt would have been ns justi?
fiable to do this as to uso a drug. Such
practices deserve the severest reprehension.
They can have no other source than
sympathy with crime, and they strive to
encourage murder rather than to repress it.
Tho Philadelphia Enquirer thinks New
York is, indeed, rather peculiar in its
ideas in relation to the criminal law. The
other day a man was acquitted ol murder in
New York upon tho ground that, although
he was sane the moment beforo the commis?
sion of the deed, and the moment after, he
was insane at the particular instant when be
drew the trigger of tho pistol. Now, in
their mercy they stupify u murderer before
they hang him. What next?

money article of the New York Herald, of
the 8th instant, says: "Forty or fifty mil?
lions of dollars have goue South, and have
been, or will be, absorbed there. The How
of currency in that direction, at the present
time, is still going on, but on a diminished
scale. More will go in the spring in the
shape of Northern capital, which, under
the temptations of tho high price of cotton,
is seeking investment there. Emigration
has set in, aud there will bo a stroug cur?
rent in the spring. The revival of cotton
culturo is a fever just now with capitalists."
