A Rhode Island horse fancier, who
thought he knew a thing or two. recently
swapped a white horse for a cream-colored
one, paying something "to boot." More
recently lie traded off bis cream-color for a
beautiful, glossy, coal-black horse, paying
"boot" again. Very soon, however, the
coal-black horse grow rusty, and, in spite
of all his efforts, has turned into tho identi
oal white horse which he traded off.
An old gentleman waiting for a train in
the great depot at Chicago recently, said to
a bystander: "Only think of it! But a
little over thirty years ago I was offered
eighty acres of land, on purt of which this
depot is now built, for a sorrel horse and
saddle, and I was fool enough to keep the
sorrel. "
On Monday, a negro man, named Harley,
in the employ of the Wilmington aud Man?
chester Railroad, was crushed to death
while fastening the couplings of a train of
cars.
Daring the last quarter of 1868, 185 mar?
riage licenses wero issued in Charleston.

considerable effect.
Anew piece of music entitled "Hinda's
Lament,'* by Miss Emma Westfield, of
Greenville, was copy-righted Tuesday in the
United States District Court.
