C. Wednesday Morai DE:. January 6. 1869. A Different Thins. It is astonishing what a difference it makes whoae ox is gored, in ono's judgment of the result. The editor of the Spring? field (Mass.) Republican has lately been arrested in New York, at tho instance of Mr. Erie Railroad Fish. It seems that it was a proceeding to mortify and punish that editor for his free commenta on tho Erie Bailroad administration. Whatever was the reason, however, the New York Tribune grows terribly wroth at it, and it has kindled in its blood all the fiery memo? ries of Magna Charta, tonching the sanctity of personal liberty. The editor thinks "the whole proceeding reads like the stories of the famous lettre du cachet during the days of tho Bastile," and adds: "The liberty of the citizen is as sacred for an hour as for a life-time; and tho pro? ceeding which caught up Mi-. Bowles from the society of his friends, and swept him into jail without the opportunity of send? ing a message to his sick wife, was brutal and tyrannical. " Doesn't it require a front of brass to put Buch excellent sentiments as these in a jour? nal that was as quiet us a mouse wheu the Stantons and Sawards, by tho tinkling of their little bells, mude every fortress in tho North a Bastile for the incarceration of poli tical offenders-not "for an hour," but for months and years-without "bail or niain prizo," or even the whisper of a charge against them? Tho New York Express quotes the Tribut.e's "excellentsentiments," and says: "Amen to this! Bat how comes such a sentiment in the Tribune? Simply because a New England friend of its own faith was deprived of his liberty for a night, on a warrant from Mr. Fisk, of the Erie Road. Neither tho cause, the time, nor manner of this arrest can we approve of; but when men who were innocent of all offences against citizens or the State, were thrust into the wretched casements of Fort La Fayette, drugged thore by military orderlies ou military warrants, with no bail allowed, we never knew the Tribune to show any respect for that 'sacred liberty of the citi? zen,' which now arouses its indignation." -o The Paris Moniteur, which has boen in tarn the official organ of all the Govern? ments of Franco since the first revolution, will soon discontinue that relation. As it is the property of a private party, and owes its official character merely to a contract with tho Government, Louis Napoleon prefers io have his own paper, and has, therefore, concluded to establish u now organ, which will bo owned as well as edited by tho Go? vernment. The French Tribunal have just decided that tho officiul paper bas not the right to assume the uamo Moniteur. -o DESTITUTION IN NEW YOUR.-It is esti? mated that no less than 200,000 persons are now residing in Now York city who have no work, no real homes, and no means which iusnre them a livelihood. Some of them beg or steal outright; but a largo uumber ( kc out ii miserable existence by running into debt for lodging and board, or by bor? rowing from week to week of whomsoever will lend them, or by quartering themselves on reluctant relatives or friends. Tho re? sult is reported to bo an aggregate of waut, squalor, misery and degradation fearful to contemplate. The House met at 12 M. The Speaker took tbe Chair, the roll was called and a quorum announced. Prayer by Rev. S. Saunders. Mr. Whipper, from the Committee on the 1 Judiciary, reported unfavorably on the pe? tition of the Edgefield bar to Lavo the Court of Equity continued. Adopted. On motion of Mr. Tomlinson, a bill to establish a State Orphan Asylum was read n second time, and ordered to be engrossed for a third reading. M., tho House adjourned. -o WHAT You DRINK.-The Board of Exciso in Now York have just oompleted a chomi cal analysis of tho variouj kinds of liquors sold at various saloons in that city as "Bourbon" whiskey, and tho result is pub? lished for thc benefit of whom it may con? cern. Oat of thirty-eight specimens sub? jected to test, only two were found pure. Thc ingredients of which most of this "fine old whiskey" is composed are as follows Fusil oil, rancid lamp oil, grceu tea, prussic acid, wintergreen and strychnine. Tho commodities sold as brandy and gin were found to be made up of compounds equally vile. Somo of tho newspapers have been making these exposures of late, but as these were set down as .sensational, they did not attract much attention. But tho exposures of the Board of Excise arc official, and will probably open tho eyes of tho public to the poisons that aro palmed off on them. -o NAPOLEON'S TENURE OF OFFICE.-Twenty years have passed since tho present Empe? ror of tho French was elected President of tho French Republic, that election having takeu place on the 10th of December, 1818. Already tho second Bonaparte has held power longer than most of tho living mo? narchs of Europe. A new generation bus sprung up since bo bas been at the bead of tho French nation, and all tho European sovereigns who at first viewed him as nu adventurer, have admitted bim to equality. -o The house of Lathrop, Ludiugton ?v Co., of New York, suspended on Saturday. Dec 25 JAIL DELIVERY IN MARLBORO.-Tho Che raw Democrat bringa us a report that the prisoner! in Marlboro jail rose against the jailor, and after mastering him, seven of them made their escape. No damage was done further than choking the jailor for a time. This news may be exaggerated, but it is oertain that some prisoners have es? caped. A sleighing party, at Jackson, Penn., last Thursday, While going to an entertainment, endeavored to oross a pond on which the thiok ioe bad been ont. The thin ice imme? diately let tho sleigh through, and thirty people aro reported to have been drowned, none but the driver escaping. By n premature explosion at the wreck of the steamship Scotland, off Sandy Hook, Captain W. L. Churchill, lato of tho navy, and three others, were blown to atoms. Several persons were injured. Scott has deter? mined to issue State bonds for the redemp? tion of the bills of the Bank of the State, as provided for by Act of the Legislature. -o The Democrats elected their municipal officers in Charlotte, N. C., on Monday, by a mnjority of about 24.0. -o PALMETTO PIKE COMPANY.-The eleventh anniversary of this company was celebrated la?t night, when the following officers were elected for tho ensuing year: President-W.
