AN UNFORTUNATE FAMILY.-A young girl
named Abson, who bas for tho past three
months been an inmate of the Hudson
County Alms-bouse, at Snake Hill, gave
birth, four days ago, to a child of negro
parentage, which was found dead in a bed
yesterday morning, supposed to have been
smothered by ito mother. Tho circum?
stances of the case are somewhat singular.
About eight years ago ono Abson and his
wife were living on a small farm in the
lower part of Bergen, New Jersey. Sud?
denly the wife died by poison. The hus- i
band was arrested for the murder, and while
lying in the Hudson County Jail, awaiting
trial, committed suicide by cutting his
throat. One child, a little girl six years of i
?ge, was left an orphan by the double
tragedy. About a year ago, at which time
she was 14 years of age, the girl was sent to
work on a farm at Rockaway, New Jersey.
During the absence of her employer's
family, a negro on tho farm effected her
ruin, wbioh, being discovered, und she
being enciente. Bho was sent back to Ber?
gen, and thence to tho alms-house, where
the child was born and killed as stated.
Coroner Warren will hold an inquest.

only serious danger attending life and pro?
perty in California. During that time it has
claimed five -victims, and $51,000,000,
one-quarter of one life, and $50,000 n
year. After hinting at a prospect of earth?
quakes for us also, a Sau Francisco editor
charges three iinportaet items to our ac?
count-lightning, sun-stroke und freezing.
Neither of these three sources of death are
known, he says, in Colifornia. In the
calm, beneficent air of California, the
thunder storm has no pince, and neither
life or property is ever destroyed by it.
Sun-stroke claimed some thousands of
victims bore during the past year. Cali?
fornia bas nothing to offset against it. And
every victim reported "frozen to death" in
tho Atlantic States during tho terrible Win?
ter of 1867-S, might have slept comfortably
in tho open air iu California every night of
that season.

THE NEWBURYPORT INCENDIARY:.-For
fifteen or twenty years Newburyport has
had an incendiary. Four churches and
smaller structures unnumbered, have pe?
rished by bis destroying hand. Ho takes a
pride in bis work, and in the system and
secresy with which be does it. Every lire
of tho long series has been sot by the mys?
terious man himself, is, in each instance,
filled with kerosene oil, saturated kindling
wood, and other highly inflammable sub?
stances. A candle cud is placed in this, and
so lighted that in n few inimit?s the whole
will bo in Hames. Yoar after year, at irre?
gular intervals, this little contrivance is
employed in the work of destruction which
tbis man is bent upon. After every con?
quered fire, this little box is found where
the conflagration bogan; yet in all this time
the man who makes the boxes, who carries
them about and fires them, has successfully
defied all agencies of discovery.

A RAILROAD ACCIDENT-No ONE KILLED.
Yesterday afternoon, a passenger train ap?
proaching the city on tho New York Central
Railroad, was thrown from tho track at
Spruce Run, while at a high rate of speed,
and ran into a frame house, completely de?
molishing that structure aud doing exten?
sive damage to the cars. The baggage
master of the train, M. A. Cook, was severely
cut and bruised about tho head, und a num?
ber of passengers slightly injured. The
family occupying tho upper story of the
house were lonna after the disaster scattered
over tho roofs of tho oars, more frightened
than hurt. The passengers regard their
escape as miraculous. Tho ncoident wus
caused by a misplaced switch.

Tho Louisville Courier-Journal gives an
account of a young lady, near Hickman,
Kentucky, who has spent nineteen of her
twenty-eoven years in sleep. She wakes
frequently ton or twelve times a day, but
cannot remain awake more than ten to
twenty minutes at a time. Her appearance
is said to be rather prepossessing, and she is
much more intelligent and well-informed
than would be expected from one in her
condition.
A Yankeo farmer got a lot of rats and shut
them up in a singlo cage; they devoured
ono another till only a single ono was left.

excited with the blood of his fellow-rats,
having become a genuine cannibal, it killed

An English pauper who made faces dur?

laughing, has been sentenced to twenty-one
days hard labor, as punishment for tho
offence.
Miss Emily Faithfull, one of the prorui-1

tain, says that out of 6,000,000 women of
England 2,500,000 aro unmarried.
