ACCIDENT.-There was un explosion in
Dr. Ayer's Laboratory, yesterday, which
caused some excitement in tho -vicinity.

It is asserted that a chap named Poston,
a brother of the delegate from Arizona Ter?
ritory, holds a contract at $90,000 per an?
num for carrying the mail over a route in
that Territory that does not exist.
Laura Reno, who swore vengeance ou the
murderers of her brothers, one of tho Tvic
tims of the Indiana vigilauce committee,
met a man at her brothers' funeral whom
she ordered away, telling him that she knew
him to be one of the murderers. He slunk
away without a word of denial.
A young lady of Indianapolis recently
used corrosive sublimate to remove a light
moustache on hor upper lip. The applica?
tion proved unexpectedly successful, for it
removed tho moustache and a portion of the
upper lip besides.
Tho tunnel under the Chicago River,
known as the Washington Street Tunnel,
connectiug tho South and Yv*Ot.t divisions of
tho city by a solid and permanent roadway,
has just been completed.
Presideut Johusou, it is understood, in?
tends retiring all army officers over sixty
two years of age, among whom are Adjutant
General Lorenzo Thomas. Paymaster-Gene?
ral Brice and Brigadier-General Philip St.
George Cooke.
On and after January, 1SG9, all editors,

Ofricc of the Comptroller-General:

Tin- functions of Tax-Collectors will ceaso in
every County in thc State, whenever a "County
Treasurer" shall have been appointed and quali
liod in and for said County.
The quarterly taxes for'the quarter ending De?
cember ?ll, 1S?8, arc duo on thc 1st day of janu?
ary, 1H09. County Treasurers, or Tax-Collectors,
will give proper notieo immediately upon tin:
receipt of these instructions, and will proceed to
assess, and collect taxes as follows, viz:
On thc market value of tho gross amount of
Spirituous Liquors manufactured during thc quar?
ter ending December 31, 1808, 5 per cent.
From the sale of Goods, Wares or Merchandize,
embracing all the articles of trade, sale, barter or
exchange, which any person shall nave made ?lur?
ing the quarter, twenty cents, [General Orders
No. 139,] and fifteen cents, [Convention,] making
thirty-five [35] cents on every one hundred [too]
dollars' worth.
On all articles manufactured for sala, barter or
exchange, during tho quarter, fiftocu [15] cents
[Convention] on every $100 worth.
County Treasurers and Tax-Collectors will notice
the accompanying circular in reference to sales of
Cotton, which is included with other articles of
trade, sale or bartor.
In tho accompanying blanks you will place the
amount of manufactured articles in the same
column with amount of sales, Ac, but designate
them by proper remarks, and collect only fifteen
[15] cents on the $100 worth of manufactured arti?
cles, as Convention tax, there being no general
tax on said articles.
In most cases, sales of Cotton woro not included
in the assessments for last quarter; you will,
therefore, require merchants to return all sales
which were omitted in last returns. Cotton raised
previous to January 1, ISGS, is taxed by tho United
States, and therefore will not be included in sales.
In al! cases, officers will bo required to pay to
thc State Treasurer such funds as they receive,
and must enter thc- same upon thc duplicates in
