Thia power has neon accurately surveyed by Prof. John LcConte, of tho South Ca? rolina University. He estimates that by doubling tho original capacity of tho Canal, as required by tho Act, that tho Sower Becured to Bridgo street will be 355 oree-power, the average head being four? teen feet; and from Bridgo street toits mouth 532 horse-power, with an average head of twenty-ono feet, and a current of ono foot per second. With a current of two feet per second tho powers would bo 710 and 1,064 horse-power; and if the ma? chinery is not run at night tho power may bo doubled, by accumulating water in re ?ervoirs. "As thc supnly of water," saya Prof. LoConte, "which may bo turned from thc River into tito Caual at ita head is almost unlimited, tho Caual can bo enlarged to an extent commensurate with the demand for water power. If desired, it may bc made to supply water to the extent of 5,000 horse-power or more. In fact, by very simple arrangements, ono-third, or one half, or even more, of tho whole water in Broad Rivor might bc turned into such au enlarged Canal. This water power is within tho limits ol the city of Columbia, and contiguous tc railroads which connect it with nearly every County in the State of South Caroli? na, and with the adjoining States of North Carolina and Georgia, and their abundan! supplies of Clifton, lice, corn, wheat, beef, pork, ami other vegetable and animal pro? ductions, and also in daily communication with the sea-ports of Charleston, SSavannat and Wilmington. Thu city is supplier with gas and linc water; the climate ia sa lubrioiia and healthy, being above tin miasmatic region; lands in thc- vicinity are cheap, and thc soil fertile, and then aro but few sections in thc South which present greater attractions for sottlemen or residence. Tho water power, from iii magnitude and advantages, is uneqnalci by any in South Carolina, and unsurpassoi by auy in tho Southern country. "The property will bo sohl on tho follow ing conditions, to wit: 1st. Tho purchaso shall, within two years from the date o conveyance, completo tho widening am deepening of said Canal to at least twic its original capacity, [tts origiual capaci ty was fifteen feet wido at top, eight fee at bottom, and four feet in depth. T double it, according to Prof. LeConte's re port, it will require tho removal of 3(1,10 cubic yard-* ot earth, and 3,20.1 cullie yard of stone, to Bridge street; and from Bridg street to its mouth 22,170 cubic yards ? earth, but no stone-.] That thc same sha always bc kept open for boating purpose* free of charges, for toll or otherwise, t where it is now used.
