Senator Sprague has purchased the
Cumberland Island, on the coast of I

clement, give it, in the estimation of tho
faculty, a marlu-d superiority over every
other diffusive stimulant as a diuretic,
tonic and restorative.
These satisfactory credentials from pro?
fessional men of tho highest rank were
published in a condensed form, and en?
closed with each bottle cf tho Schnapps,
as one of the guarantees of it? genuine
neus. Other precautions against fraud
were also adopted; a patent was obtained
for the article, the label wa? copyrighted,
a/eic siiuile of the proprietor'? autograph
signature wau attached to each label and
cover, his name and that of the prepara?
tion were enibosBedon the bottles, and the
corks wore sealed with bia private seal.
No articlo had over been sold in this coun?
try undor tho name of Schnapps prior to
tho introduction of Wolfe'? Schiedam Aro?
matic Schnapps, in 1851; and the label was
deposited, as his trade mark, in the United
States District Court for the Southern Dis?
trict of New York during that year.
It might bo auppoaed, by persons unac?
quainted with the daring character of the |
pirates who prey upon tho reputation of j
honorable merchants, by vending delete- |
rious trash under their name, that the
protections so carefully thrown around
these Schnapps would have precluded tho
introductions and salo of counterfeits.
They seem, however, only to have stimu?
lated the rapacity of impostors. The trade
mark of the proprietor has been stolen:!
tho endorsement which his Schiedam
Aromatic Schnapps alone received from
tho medical profession has benn claimed
by mendacious humbugs; his labels and
bottle? have been imitated, his advertise?
ment? paraphrased, Iiis circulars copied,
and, worse than all, dishonorable retailers,
after disposing of tho genuino contents of
Iii? bottles, have tilled them up with com?
mon gin, the most deleterious of ah
liquors, and thus made his name and
brand a cover for poison.
Thc public, the medical profession and
tho sick, for whom the Schiedam Aromatic
Schnapps is proscribed as a remedy, are
equally interested with the proprietor in
tho detection and suppression of these ne?
farious practices. Tho genuino article,
manufactured at tho establishment of tho
undersigned, in Schiedam, Holland, is dis?
tilled from a barley of tho finest quality,
and flavored with an ossential extract of
tho berry of tho Italian juniper, of une?
qualled purity. By a process unknown in
tho preparation of any other liquor, it is
freed from every acrimonious and corro?
sivo clement.
Complaints have been received from tho
loading physicians and families in the
Southern States, of tho salo of cheap imi?
tation? of tho Schiedam Aromatic
Schnapps in thone markets; and travel, i s,
who are in the habit of using it as an anti?

institute inquiries on tho subject, and to

as they may ascertain to bo engaged in
tho atrocious Bystem of deception. In
conclusion, tho undersigned would Bay
that ho has produced, from under tho
hand? of thc most distinguished men of
Bcience in America, proof? unanswerable
of tho parity and medicinal excellence of
tho Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps; that ho
has expended many thousand dollars in
surrounding it with guarantees and safe?
guards, which ho designed should protect
tho public and himself against fraudulent
imitations; that ho has shown it to be thc
only liquor in tho world that can be uni?
formly depended upon as unadulterated;
that he has challenged investigation,
analysis, comparison, and experiment in
all its forma; and from every ordoal the
preparation which bears his name, seal
and trade mark, haa come off triumphant.

fellow-citizens generally, to tho medical
profession and tho sick, to denounce and
oxposo tho Charlatans who counterfeit
thes" evidences of identity, and ho calls
upon tho press and tho public to aid him
