A I'oc-m.
J Deoemher, dark and dreary, sat
tho writer weak and weary, ponder?
ing o'er hin memoranda book of
items used before-book of scrawling,
head-notes rather, items taken days
together, then in hot and sultry wea?
ther, using up muoh time, and lea?
ther-pondering we these items o'er.
While we pondered, slowly rocking,
(through our mind queer ideas flock?
ing,) came a quiok and nervous
knocking-knocking at the sanctum
door. "Sure that must be Jonks,"
we mattered-".Tonks that's knock?
ing at our door; Jonks, tho everlast?
ing bore."
Ah, how well do we "..cmind ns,
an the walls that thore confined ne,
"exchanges" lay behind us all scat?
tered o'er the floor. Thought we
Jonks wants to borrow some news?
papers till to-morrow, and 'twill
bo relief from sorrow to get rid of
Jonks the bore, by opening wide the
door. Still the visitor kept knock?
ing-knocking louder thou before.
And the scattered pile of papers
out some very curious capers, being
lifted by the breezes coming through
another door; and we wished (the
wish was evil for ouo deemed always
civil, that Jenks was to the devil) to
atay there evermore, there to find his
Jove-Jenks, the never tiring boro.
Backing up our patience firmer,
then, without another, "Mr. Jenks,"
?aid we, "your pardon, your forgive?
ness, we implore. But the fact is,
.we were reading of some curious pro
-oeeding, and thus it was unheeded
your loud knooking thore before."
Here we opened wide tho door.
Bnt fancy now our feelings-for it
wasn't Jenks tho bore-Jenks the
nameless evermore.
But the form that stood before us
caused a trembling to come o'er us,
and memory quickly boro us back
again to days of yore; days when
"items" were in plenty, and where'er
this writer went he picked up items
by the score. 'Twas the dark form
of our "devil," thrust in attitude un?
civil, and he thrust his head within
the door, with-"the foreman's out
of copy, sir, and says he wants some
more." Yes, like Alexander, wanted
more.
Now this "local" had already walk?
ed about till nearly dead-he had
sauntered through the city till his
feet were very sore-walked through
the streets so dusty, and by ways
running off into all portions of the
city, both public* and obscure-had
examined every store, and questioned
every "feller" whom he met from
door, if anything was stirring-any
accident occurring-not published
heretofore, and had met with no sue
cess; he would rather kinder guess he
felt a little wicked at that ugly little
bore, with his message from the fore?
man, that ho wanted "something"
more.
"Now, 'tis time you were depart
ing, you young imp," cried we, up
starting, "get yon back into the of?
fice-office where you were before;
or tho words you have spoken will
get your bones all broken (and wo
eeized a cudgel oaken, that was lying
on the floor;) take your hands out of
yonr pockets, and leave tho sanctum
door; tell the foreman there is no
?opy? y?u ugly little bore."
And our devil, never sitting, still
is flitting, still is flitting, back and
forth npon the landing just outside
our sanctum door; tears down his
face are streaming, strange light from
his eye is beaming, and his voice is
heard still screaming, "Sir, the fore?
man wants some more."

A few years ago, at the conclusion
of a sermon, the preacher requested
some one to pass around the hat
"and take up a collection." A young
man, a stranger in tho place, jumped
np and oommencad circulating the
hat in such a way as to finish the job
at tho door, and pass out with the
proceeds. The preacher, eyeing him
aa he went out, observed: "If that
young man runs away with that
money, he'll be damned. A deacon,
sitting by tho window, seeing him
make off down the street, responded:
"And if ho hasn't run away with
that money, I'll be d-d."
