leading members of the medical profes?
sion, some twenty years ago, its proprie?
tor was well aware that it could not wholly
escape the penalty attached to all new and
useful preparations. He, therefore, en?
deavored to invest it with the strongest
possible safeguard against counterfeiters,
and to rendor all attempts to pirate it dif?
ficult and daugerous. It was submitted
to distinguished chemists for analysis, and
pronounced by them tho purest spirit ever
manufactured. Its purity and properties
havicg boon th un ascertained, sampleB of
the article were forwarded to 10,000 physi?
cians, including all the loading practition?
ers in tho United States, for purposes of
experiment. A circular, requesting a trial
of tho preparation and a report of the re?
sult, accompanied each specimen. 4,000
of the most eminent medical men in the
Union promptly roBpondcd. Their opinions
of tho article were unanimously favorable.
Such a preparation, they said, had long
been wanted by the profession, as no reli?
ance could be placed on tho ordinary
liquors of commerce: ?ll of which wore
more or leas adulterated, and, therofore,
untlt for medical purposes. Tho peculiar
excellence and strength of the oil of juni?
per, which formed ono of tho principal in?
gredients of the Schnapps, together with
an unalloyed character of the alcoholic
clement, give it, in the estimation of tho
faculty, a marked superiority over every
other diffusive stimulant as a diuretic,
tonic and restorative.
These satisfactory credentials from pro?
fessional men of tho highest rank were
published in a condensed form, and en?
closed with each hottlo of the Schnapps,
as one of the guarantees of its genuine?
ness. Other precautions against fraud
were also adopted; a patent was obtained
for the article, the label was copyrighted,

cover, his name and that of thc prepara?
tion wcro embossed on tho bottles, and the
corks wore staled with his private seal.
No article had ever been sold in this coun?
try under the name of Schnapps prior to
the introduction of Wolfe's Schiedam Aro?
matic Schnapps, in 1851; and the label was
deposited, as his trade mark, in tho United
States District Court for tho Southern Dis?
trict of Now York during that year.
It might bo supposed, by persons unac?
quainted with tho daring character of the
Eirates who prey upon tho reputation of
onorablo merchants, by vending delete?
rious trash under their name, that the
protections so carefully thrown around
these Schnapps would have precluded tho
introductions and salo of counterfeit?.
They seem, however, only to have stimu?
lated tho rapacity of impostora. Tho trade
mark of tho proprietor has been stolen:
tho endorsement which his Schiedam
Aromatic Schnapps alone received from
thc medical profession has beon claimed
by mendacious humbugs; his labels and
bottles have been imitated, his advertise?
ments paraphrased, his circulars copied,
and, worse than all, dishonorable retailers,
after disposing of the genuino contents of
his bottles, have tilled them up with com?
mon gin, thc most deleterious of all
liquors, and thus mado his name and
brand a cover for poison.
Tho public, the medical profession and
the sick, for whom thc Schiedam Aromatic
Schnapps ia prescribed as a remedy, are
equally interested with tho proprietor in
the detection and suppression of t hese ne?
farious practices. Tho genuine article,
manufactured at the establishment of the
undersigned, in Schiedam, Holland, is dis?
tilled from a barley of tho finest quality,
and flavored with an essontial extract of
tho berry of tho Italian juniper, of une?
qualled purity. By a process unknown in
the preparation of any other liquor, it is
freed from overy acrimonious and corro?
sivo element.
Complaints have beon received from tho
leading physicians and families in thc
Southern States, of tho sale of cheap imi?
tations of tho Schiedam Aromatic
Schnapps in thoso markets; and travelers,
who are in the habit of using it as an anti?
dote to the baneful influence of unwhole?
some river water, testify that cheap gin,
put up in Schiodam bottles, is frequently
palmed oft' upon tho unwary. The agents
of the undersigned have been requested to
instituto inquiries on tho subject, and to
forward to lum tho namos of such parties
as they may ascertain to bo engaged in
thc atrocious syatem of deception. In
conclusion, thc undersigned would Bay
that ho has produced, from under tho
hands of the most distinguished men of
Bcience in America, proofs unanswerable
of tho purity and modicinal excellence of
tho Sohiedam Aromatic Schnapps; that he
has expended many thousand dollars in
surrounding it with guarantees and Bafe
guards, which ho designed should protect
tho public and himself against fraudulent
imitations; that ho has shown it to bo tho
only liquor in tho world that can bo uni?
formly deponded upon as unadulterated;
that ho baa challenged investigation,
analysis, comparison, and experiment in
all its forma; and from every ordoal the
preparation which bears his name, seal
and trado mark, has como off triumphant.
Ho, therefore, feels it a duty ho owoa to his
fellow-citizens generally, to tho medical
profession and tho sick, to denounce and
expose tho Charlatans who counterfeit
these evidence* of idontity, and he calls
upon tho proas and tho public to aid him
in his efforts to remedy so groat an ovil.
The following letters and certificates,
from tho loading physicians and chemista
of this city, will provo to tho reader that
all goods sold by tho undersigned aro all
they aro represented to bo.
