THE LONDON SUBTERRANEAN HALL?
WAY.-Th? Metropolitan Railway of
London will have, when completed,
it is said, neither beginning nor end.
It will be entirely under ground, a
continuous burrow, a succession of
covered ways, with troughs of vari?
ous lengths, at irregular intervals,
open to the sky for light, but more
especially for ventilation. There are
250 trains each way daily, running at
intervals of about two minutes and
a half during tho business portion of
the doy. The traffic on this road has
trebled in four years. In the half
year ending June 80, 1867, the num?
ber of passengers carried was 11,488,
358. The receipts are about $5,000
{>er mile. The first portion of this
ino was opened in 1863, and it is
rapidly approaching final completion.
Although the road is altogether below
the surface of the streets, every effort
has been made, whore practicable,
and not too expensive, to make the
road open rather than covered. In
one locality, the company purohased
five costly mansions in coarse of erec?
tion. They were underpinned, and
now rest n pon the roof of the covered
way under them. Numerous other
large buildings have been similarly
underpinned. Many difficulties are
experienced and mnch expense in?
curred in avoiding sewers and gas
and water mains.
NEW STEAM ENGINE.-A Mr. Ben?
jamin Franklin, of Westmoreland,
England, has vindicated his right to
the name by inventing a steam en?
gine which requires only one
fourth of the steam for the same
power attained in other engines of
equal size; dispenses with piston,
crank and steam chest; al m ont en?
tirely overcomes friction, costs only
qnartor the usual amount, and will
not easily get out of repair. Centri?
fugal force is the agent employed,
and it is capable of fifteen hundred
re vol utions a minute.

notice that he would inform, free of
charge, enterprising yonng men how
to make a fortune without capital,
replies to several anxious inquirers:
"E^ery one of you pull off your
coats, leave off yonr army sixes, quit
whiskey, go to work, make a crop of
corn, cotton, peas and potatoes;
