ON Two ACRES.-Messrs. Hasseltiue
& Ghafee, the enterprising dry goods
merchants of our village, gathered
from a two acre lot in the corpora?
tion, 4,000 pounds of seed cotton.
We mention this fact merely as an
evidence of what may be dono on
highly cultivated soil. "When our
farmers adopt the new system of
cultivating less land and bestowing
more attention to the improvement
and culture of what they can properly
work, we may then look for more
general prosperity. There are thou?
sands of acres of land in Lancaster
superior for the growth of cotton
than that alluded to above, and could
be made to yield richer gains; but
what is lacking just now, even among
our most practical farmers, is a differ?
ent and more thorough system of
cultivation. We are pleased to learn
that Mr. H. & C., are making prepa?
rations to introduce here Dixon's
celebrated prolific cotton plant, and
also improved agricultural imple?
ments. With ns, it may be truth?
fully said, that "old thiugs have
passed away."-Lancaster Ledger.
THE CORN FIELDS OF THE GREAT
WEST.-A gentleman writing from
Illinois to a friend in Boston, says:
"While ont hunting, two weeks
ago, I was in some corn-fields which
bolong to a man named Sullivan.
He probably owns more laud than
any farmer in the State. He is the
proprietor of nine townships, each
six .miles square. This year he has
25,000 acres of oom. This seems like
a big story, but it is nevertheless
true. It was just the easiest thing in
tho world to get lost in his corn?
fields. I strayed into one field and
walka fonr ana a half miles beforo I
came to the end of the row of corn
which I followed."
WORK, OF THE CONFEDERATE PRI?
VATEERS.-The Confederate pri va
ieers did a large business. Tho Ala?
bama captured twenty-eight ships,
twenty-two barks, five brigs, six
schooners, the steamer Ariel, and thc
United. States gun-boat Hutteraa.
The Shenandoah captured thirty
eight vessels, mostly ships and burks.
The . Florida took thirty-six; the
Sumter- twenty-seven. There wcro
probably three hundred craft of va?
rious kinds captured by tho Confede?
rate privateers.
A CHARLESTON PRIMA DONNA.
Mamselle Louisa Durand, a native of
Charleston, bat who has resided in
Now York'for some time, mndo a suc?
cessful debut in the West lately, and
will pay lier native home a visit this
season. Mamselle Durand bas a rich
soprano voice of great compnss and
high cultivation. This makes the
third contribution of this State to
musical circles of late; the two others
being Miss Kellogg and Miss McCul?
lough.
The Mobile Register says Southern
planters aro better off to day than
they were before the war. They aro
freo from debt, and receiving moro
for their cotton than ever before.
Formerly they were always ono crop
in debt, and belonged to their fac?
tors. Now they have learned econo?
my, and aro their own own masters.
Tho bloated bond-holdors certainly
have an uncommon good thing of it
if the President's figuring is nccurute.
They get the bonds for nothing, and
the Government pays thom a largo
premium for taking them.

the country take a vote upon the
question whether or not they desire
suffrage; and if that bo decided in the
affirmative, it will be time enough to
agitate it.
