A correspondent of the Journal of
the Telegraph writes from Portland,
Maine:
"In the month of April, 1857, a
fearful gale sprang up one Sunday
night, which prostrated the telegraph
wires between Portland and Bangor,
in a moat discouraging manner. Tak?
ing a crow of men with tho necessary

the early train, dropping a man at
the stations as we went along, to foot
it back and mend the break. I saw
some fifty breaks within seventy-five
miles, besides numerous crosses and
trees on the wires. When I arrived
at Lewiston, something over 100
smiles from Bangor, I ran to the ol?
io?, and found it was O. K. to Port?
land. I at once telegraphed repair?

through to Waterville, without stop?

-willing, and not only anxious to do

vice. They stopped the train at every
break and helped me repair, and,
when the regular passenger train
overtook us near Waterville, I jumped
on board, and in a few moments

ville. As soon as possible, I obtained
a hand-car, and hiring a couple of
Frenchmen lo propel it, started with
Pierre for a night 'raid.' It happen?
ed to bo a bright, moon-light night,
the only ono during that whole moon.
"About mid-night wo were between
Clinton and Burnham. The French?
men were clearing a heavy trco from
the wires, and Pierre was some dis?
tance in advance, on top of a pole. I
was near by, endeavoring to extricate
the wire from a mass of roots in
which it had become entangled, when
I was startled by a crackling in tho
woods, like the stealthy tread of
some heavy animal on thu dry twigs.
Involuntarily grasping my hatehet, I
stood with ears and eyes open, and
as I peered around I caught sight of
what seemed, to my excited imagina?
tion, to be two black heads, slowly
and cautiously appearing above the
clump. I thought to myself, 'here
is a situation for the father of a
family !' It was of no use to run, for,
as it appeared to me, then, there was
the bare (bear) faet of eight legs
against two; but as the black heads
emerged and their bodies came into
view, I saw that they were not bears
at all, but two good sized boys. The
next instant I was horrified by seeing
them raise their guns and take deli?
berate aim at Pierre, who was away
np on the pole, quietly attending to
his business, aud unconscious of tho
danger which menaced him. Like
lightning it flashed into my mind
that they took him for a bear, and I
gave a yell which must have aston?
ished all who heard it. It had the
desired effect, however, and I came
out of the woods and explained to
the boys that it was a 'human' up
that pole, and that I objected to their
giving him a double dose of blue
pills, as I did not think his diaphragm
would stand it.
"Pierre was in a high state of
wrath when he discovered how near
he had come to having his connec?
tion broken, and he delivered a small
speeoh from his cedar pulpit, which
waa anything but complimentary to
the moon-light huntsmen. He ad?
vised them to go back to their musk
rat-hunting, and not attempt to shoot
bears with homoeopathic pills. The
boya apologized to the best of their
ability and flitted.
"It was a narrow escape, but we
could not stop to moralize. We kept
on with our work and made twenty
milts that night, removing some fifty
trees from tho wires, and mending
numerous breaks. At half-past 10 a.
m., we had the satisfaction of feeling
the current both ways, and knowing
that the wires were in working condi?
tion through."
A. NEW WAY TO TEST LIQUOR.-A
man traveling entered a tavern, and j
seeing no ono present but thc land- j
lord and a negro, scated himself and
entered into conversation with the
negro. Shortly ho asked Sambo if
he was dry. Sambo said ho was.
Stranger told him to go to the. bar
and luke something at his expense.
"Negro did so, and shortly left. Land
lori snyB to tho stranger:
"Aro you acquainted with that
nigger?"
"No, never saw him I? fore; but
why do yon ask?"
"I supposed so, from your con?
versing with liim, and asking him to
tako a drink."
"Oh," said tho customer, "I was
only experimenting. Tho fact is, I
wus dry myself, and I thought that
if your liquor didn't kill tho negro in
fifteen minutes, I would venture to
lake a drink myself."
ANOTHER WASHING. -James Boger,
a colored hand on the Charleston
and Savannah Bail road, attempted
to j amp from a train, on Tuesday,
bnt foll and wan ron over by the
train. He died from the effects of
his injuries.
Jessie Thompson has been arrested
at Vicksburg, on the charge of being
the assassin of General Hindman, he
having confessed to a negro that ho
did the deed, bnt now denies it.
George Mixer, son of the former
proprietor of the Charleston Hotel,
died in New York on Saturday last.
The refractory prisoners in the
Marion jail have capitulated at last.
