SHIPWRECKS ON THE BRITISH COAST.
The English staticians tell us that
during last year there were 2,513 ves?
sels wrecked on tho British coast,
and that 1,333 lives wero lost with
the vessels. In ono mouth, Decem?
ber, 326 men wont down. Out of tho
total number of vessels lost last year,
1,551 wero engaged in tho coasting
trade. 4
DEATH OP COMMODORE PATTY.
A despatch from Sun Fraucisco an?
nounces the death of Commodore
John Patty, on the 10th of Novem?
ber, at Honolulu. Tho Commodore
was long known as "thc ancient
mariner of the Pacific." Ho had
crossed tho ocean between San Frau
cisco and tho Sandwich Islands moro
than 100 times.
A powder explosion occurred on
Monday, at tho Dean Ore Mine, in
Montgomery County, N. C. A work?
man, surrounded by several others,
was hadling a can of new blasting
powder, and discussing its merits,
when tho powder exploded, killing
three of tho workmen, and seriously
injuring several others.
Col. Robert "Withers, who served
through tho war iu the Confederate
army, was shot three times Saturday,
and killed, at Heudersouville, on the
Liouisville and Nashville Railroad, by
a man named Sam Doxie. Tho dis?
pute arose about the loading of a
freight car.
Larry Cook, a printer, died at the
county poor house, at Decatur, UL,
last week, aged iifty-seven years.
He served in tho Florida wur, under
General Taylor; in tba Mexican war,
under General Scott, aud was a vol?
unteer in the Union army during the
late war.
Among tho valuable patents which
have recently expired, and which the
Government has refused to renew,
is that of Colonel Hoe, whoso huge
printing presses may now be manu?
factured by anybody with capital
enough.
. In accordance with the laws of the
State of Connecticut, ail children
under 15 years of ago have been dis?
charged from the factories at New
Britain, to enable mern to go to
school tho required three months of
the year.
The returns from tho English elec?
tions have now all been received.
According to the classification of the
Times, there will bo in the next
House 384 liberals and 274 conserva?
tives, a liberal majority of 112.

vain operated on her optics. At length
the fame of one Dr. Finnegan penetrated
tho Kind's Court, and, after many efforts,
ho at length succeeded in being allowed to
operato on Squintella. He approached
her Highness with that diffidence and ..'al?
lant ry which always has been so charac?
teristic of the Finnegan's-and even now
is as bright as of yore -and holding un to
her nose two pounds of LIMBURGER
CHEESE, her eyes at once resumed their
natural shape. Squintella, from that day
forth, shone "Queon of Love and Beauty"
at her papa's Court.
Finnegan, shortly afterwards, was
gathered to his fathers; but. prior to his
lamented decease, he confided the secret
of tho manufacture of this wonderful
Cheese to tho President of the United
States, who furnished thc receipt to the
present manufacturer.
